End of McMinnville and on to Florence

We were only in McMinnville for 8 days, but we had lots of fun.  As you saw in a previous post, we enjoyed good meals, wine tastings and plenty of exploration.

starting to look like Fall

The last two days turned out to be the best!   Both days brought us something we (I) hadn't planned for but very much enjoyed.

Pam and John's fall travels put them in Salem, Oregon, only about 25 miles from us!     We were so happy when they said they'd come up for a visit.      We talked and talked (we haven't seen each other for a while ya know.....) then visited the next door Evergreen Air and Space Museum (where Dave and John strolled the exhibits and Pam and I sat in conveniently placed airline seats and continued our talks).

After the museum we drove into McMinnville and had dinner on the patio at the Golden Valley Brewery.    No pictures.     It was a grand afternoon.   Thanks Pam and John!

The second wonderful, unplanned event was sitting in (yes, IN) the campgrounds landscaping to watch the fabulous Oregon International Airshow taking place directly across the street.

see Dave?

When I originally made our reservations at Old Stone Village RV Park, we were to leave on Friday.    The wonderful woman on the phone asked if we were in a hurry to leave....I said we weren't in a hurry, and she replied that if we stayed one more day we'd get to see a great airshow.    Done!    thank you very much lady on the phone.

We got to see the entire show, all day long, free of charge.    We both pronounced it one of the best airshows we'd ever seen.   We were up off our feet with surprise as an F-18 Hornet came up from behind us......very low and so fast that moisture boiled off the leading edge of the wings as it passed over us.      Yikes!   So many planes, such unbelievable exhibitions and aerobatics.    My pictures are pitiful, the planes were going too fast, two high, and I was too excited to hold the damn phone still!

F-15s, F-18s, a Heritage flight of a F-16 and a P-51, a Mitchell, a F6F, two T-6  trainers, and a couple civilian planes - a STOL Maule demonstration team, and a Long Easy. The Canadian AirForce's Snowbird team show finished the day. Phew!

low and fast flyover

The next day we left and headed down the coast to Florence.   The weather alternated between dense coastal fog and brilliant sunshine.    The views were stunning.

At one point, we almost got ourselves in trouble.   We pulled over at what we thought was a "viewpoint' to eat lunch.   Before we started off again, through the pull off (or what we thought was a pull off) and back onto 101,  I realized that this was actually the beginning of a very narrow, very twisty road paralleling 101 down along the shoreline.    "RV's and trucks NOT advised" said the sign, I noticed.   Uh oh.

Dave calmly unhooked the Jeep, backed Beluga out of the wrong place, hooked back up and off we went!    Oh Dave....💕

We're now sitting in our beautiful, silent, bird filled site (26) at the Florence Elks Lodge RV Park.   Ah....

Sunday we had a sunny day, so we checked out some of the places we've enjoyed along the north and south Jetties, listened to the NASCAR race on Rocky's radio, had dinner at one of our favorite restaurants, the Waterfront Depot, and did a little grocery shopping.

Today, Monday, it's raining.   Rain is forecast for the rest of the week.

We're going to the movies and out to dinner.    I don't know the last time we were in a movie theatre so we're looking forward to it.    Tomorrow we move east to Eugene.

Here's Annie!

  1. Yes, it was a wonderful surprise to find us so close to each other after so many months. We definitely had much catching up to do. It was a great time. You had the jackpot seats for the air show. I can only imagine all the action. Beautiful drive along the coast. There's never a bad photo. So glad you didn't take the "wrong" road. A little inconvenience but all was safe. Love Annie in her element...outside, dirty, and no shoes (or red boots).

  2. Living the very good life...and not pushing the envelope on twisty roads!! And that airshow! Having that hornet come from behind sounds startling! And a good preview. Great to see the foursome gathered at the museum. And Annie ...just scoop her up in your arms! CindyP

    1. You're right Cindy, Life is good and we're having a good time. We sometimes push the envelope, but never with big Beluga. Thanks for riding along, although I really wish you were actually riding along next to us with your sweet Escape!

  3. Good morning Sue…always a pleasure to read and see your posts! Great you had a visit with Pam and John. I know how much Dave loves the planes…all kinds of planes…and what a real treat to have the show right where you were without a large crowd. Fresh cut flowers and a waterfront view and a yummy lunch sounds so peaceful and inviting. What movie did you see? We haven’t been to a theater in years! I love seeing Annie…and especially playing in the dirt! It’s a healthy thing to do and so many parents these days just don’t get it. Kudos to Jesse and Erin!

    1. I hope we can get back to McMinnville again next year, that was a wonderful show and a great time all together! We went to the movie theater in Florence to see Downton Abbey. What a treat that place was! Couches, chairs and tables in the lobby, four small theaters inside, each with every other row of seats removed. In their place were nice tables bolted to the floor to hold your wine, soft drinks, popcorn, or whatever. So pleasant not to be crammed in with lots of other people. I agree about kids and playing outdoors. Annie is a regular dirt devil and loves every minute of it!

  4. What a wonderful serendipity meet-up! I know you all had a great time getting caught up in person. How fun to see the show from your site, that it was a surprise opportunity, and that the phone lady made sure you knew about it!! I can see the little road you're on at the Elks with the carnivorous flowers "park" close by :-))) Hope you had a fun movie date. Annie looks very focused on her discovery - love it.

    1. We love that Elks Lodge campground. It's so very pretty and quiet but close to Florence, which we also love. I have a pretty good memory and I can't remember the last time we actually went into a movie theater. That will change whenever we are in Florence though. Great little theater, every other row of seats have been removed and replaced with tables to put your goodies (or feet) on. Annie is nothing if not focused.....

  5. Those are the best get togethers--how fun to get to see Pam and John! Mike would have loved the air show too! I think we stayed at that Elks Lodge on our Oregon coast trip. I too can't remember the last time we were in a movie theater!

    1. Next year's airshow there is in mid-August, I think. If all movie theaters were like that one, we'd be regulars!

  6. Oh my gosh we know exactly where you stopped for lunch because we did the same thing! Unfortunately with the fifth wheel we couldn't back out so had to follow the road which did eventually put us back on the 101. Glad it worked out for you.

    1. Too funny! I guess that tells us that their signage isn't very obvious! Luckily Dave hadn't pulled too far in, so he was able to back into the entrance lane a bit to rehook. phew!
For future reference, how was the road that you ended up taking?
