Almost home

We stayed in Monticello for two nights, did nothing while there except relaxed and got ready for the next few weeks.

Our next stop was in Dolores, Colorado - near Cortez.    We had a beautiful site at The Views RV Resort and man, did we have views!    Only one channel on the television and sparce internet coverage, but beautiful views and a huge, pretty site.

Ute Mountain from our site

One morning I opened the bedroom shades and saw this little sweetie looking right at me!

In addition to exploring the area we enjoyed second cup and happy hour outside behind our site, watching the clouds cover and then expose Ute Mountain.     Lewis enjoyed watching the bunnies that lived in the underbrush.

Lew keeps watch while we enjoy a glass of wine in the shade

One day, before the expected rain, we followed FS rd. 526 from the little, quirky town of Dolores up into the mountains toward Norwood.    We decided not to go all the way, however, because the clouds were building and the road was dirt.

It was a great drive, up through the green pine forest and out into the open at higher elevations.    Communities of bright yellow Aspen lived alongside beautiful orange and red ground cover type shrubs growing densely up the mountainsides.

We stopped alongside the very low Groundhog Reservoir to eat our lunch.

boat launch!

Watching over us was the very distinctive Lone Cone.....

After lunch we did a bit more exploring before turning around to try and beat the gathering rain clouds.

I'm going to stop this blog right now and pick it up again later.   The internet is fighting me and I'm afraid I'm going to lose it completely very soon.    Stay tuned to see more of our trip!

  1. What a great place to call home for a few days! I love the photo of Lew waiting so patiently for the bunnies, the lone tree with a red skirt and the peak trying to hide behind the golden trees! That area is still on the “gotta go there” list and now that we are settled in Tucson, we can go when the weather is nice.

    1. I agree, it's nice to have a home base closer to some of these interesting but out of the way areas. As long as we don't get stuck in a rut! Lewis was not sitting quietly of his own volition....he was told to "leave it" and was obeying (his eye weren't leaving it though!)

  4. Thor about took me out the other day when he saw some bunnies before I did. Those fluffers are trouble makers. Lew is a very good boy for exercising self control and just patiently watching them. Perhaps he could train Thor to have some patience?? :) The Aspens are beautiful!

    1. Ha! Lewis has a few years on sweet Thor! We trained "leave it" hard when he was a pup, sometime I'll tell you some of the tempting things we used! He's a good old boy, so tractable and sweet.

  5. Being unplugged, or nearly so, is delightful when you have great views and sweet critters on your Nature Channel 🙂

    1. Yes, we really do enjoy Moose TV or Deer TV. Much better entertainment value than the networks these days....

  6. I'm glad Lewis protected you from those bunnies, LOL. What a beautiful site you had...it's downright luxurious to be unplugged for a few days from technology. (More than that, and I start to get cranky.) The aspen are gorgeous, and so is that lone little tree on the hill.

    1. Lewis is fierce, don't you know that? It was a beautiful site and being unplugged is fine for a few days, except if it rains...... I loved that little tree sitting all alone on the hill, feet in the red bushes.

  7. You did have an ideal spot for relaxing with a wonderful view. Too bad the weather didn't hold and those darn friends didn't come to visit...haha!

  8. Actually, the weather worked out fine, no all day rain as expected. As for those darn friends....we're SO glad they came and we were able to get a good visit in. They're few and far between and very appreciated when they happen!
