Red Rock Fun in Moab

We moved south from Torrey Utah to one of our favorite spots, Moab.     We've spent a fair amount of time there, but it never seems to be enough.     This time we're staying at Spanish Trails RV Park a little south of "town".     In the past, we always found a spot at The Portal, just a little north, near Arches National Park.

happy hour at site 509

Spanish Trails is more of a campground and The Portal is really an RV resort but we've been happy in both.     Management at Spanish Trails was very friendly and happily moved people around in order to extend our stay a day or two to allow Dave a bit more tweeking on the big repair that began in Spokane.

The weather was up and down during our stay.    Dramatic skies and rain one minute, sunny and hot the next.

Moab was very busy.  Very busy.   We were happy we were staying outside of town, and we were glad there was plenty of real estate to explore where we wouldn't have to deal with tour buses, caravans of Jeeps and side by sides and mountain bikes (battery or otherwise).

We managed to have a meal at our favorite Quesadilla Mobilla Food Truck one late afternoon and found delicous Thai  just off the main drag for another meal.    Of course, we made several stops at Sweet Cravings for - you know - our sweet cravings.      After our  quesadilla linner we walked around and checked out some of the stores, looking for bargan tee shirts or hats.      Interesting murals, too many people, ugh.

This cool cat was on the side of a car wash next to the City Market.   Hmmmmm, speaking of grocery stores....(City Market is one of the two grocery stores in town).....have you ever seen this type of grape before?

They are  called "Moon Drops" and are extremely crisp and sweet.    We've only seen these black beauties in Moab and we're now hooked on them.   Withdrawal imminent, hooked.

This Big Horn Sheep mural was on the side of the Moab Brewing Company.   The closer we got to it the more the sheep disappeared.  As we backed away, we could see it.   Neat!

So, here are some pictures of our red rock explorations.    Such beautiful and dramatic scenery.   No reservations required for al fresco lunch either!     Sometimes Lewis joins us and sometimes he stays home and holds down the bed - the importance of which is underrated says he....

Although we were able to commune with nature in the solitary manner we love, we did pass 3 or 4 large encampments of what we later discovered were film crew sites.   That may explain why town was so very busy.    Evidently Kevin Costner is using the Moab area as one of several Utah sites for his new movie (s) about the westward expansion,

We passed an "indian" in full make up and loin cloth and two "western folks" also in full costume standing beside a horse trailer and a large tee pee village in the distance...sheesh.

We were very close to Arches National Park, a star in the system to be sure.    But, it has become so popular that an appointment/reservation system has been implemented to visit,  complete with two vehicle wide traffic jams along the entrance road.       One day we took Willow Springs Rd. (dirt, unimproved, grooved slick rock road) to access the park from it's interior.    We stopped for lunch near a line of dinosaur prints in the rock and joined the tourists near Balanced Rock.     Once again, I'm so thankful for our Jeep and a husband who loves driving the roads less traveled.

We're now in Bluff, Utah, we'll be here until Friday morning.     Stay tuned for our adventures in this tiny town in San Juan County.

  1. Beautiful photos Sue! Sure makes me homesick…we too love Moab! The quesadilla truck is a favorite for us too. Those beautiful very old cottonwood trees, the red rocks, the sky that constantly changes, endless views, and exploring sure conjure up sooooo many wonderful memories! Thank you for a little dose of Moab. Glad to see a grassy site for Lewis and such a great job he does holding down the bed. Great pictures of Rocky too…. specially like the one at he foot of the red wall

    2. We have some great memories of our times there with you and Joe too. It's quite a place, it's hard not to be moved by the grandness of the scenery isn't it.

    3. Totally agree Sue!

  2. Moab is in a wonderful location, so I can understand it's appeal. But isn't it always crowded in town? You put the Jeep to good use and found some relief from the crowds on the trails.
Great pictures of the red rocks!

    1. I suppose part of Moab's appeal, to some people, is it's "buzz" of people, it's liveliness, but for us that is it's only downside! Luckily there are plenty of places to escape and immerse youself in the stunning outdoors.

  3. We love Moab and have so many wonderful memories of our trips there, including camping inside the park, which was delightful. But about 10 years ago it seemed to suffer an explosion in popularity, and where we once had peace on the trails, we felt like we were hiking in a herd. We haven't been back since. :-(( You certainly found peaceful, beautiful places away from the crowds...so I'm thinking we might return one of these days. It is such a magical landscape. And oh, sweet Lew...💕

  4. You almost hate to talk about a beautiful place for fear it will "explode" as you say. Fortunately we can still find peace and quiet in nature, even in these most popular spots.

  5. Yup! We do love Moab. So very glad that we visited several times before the rest of the country discovered it. The town of Moab almost needs a reservation system with the crowds. Good to see the Quesadilla truck is still going strong. The murals seem new. Definitely the latest happening around these small towns. Love the sheep mural and its effect. So many gorgeous red rock photos. Glad the weather held some.

    1. There were several more murals that I just forgot to photograph. The sheep was a real winner for me, it was almost impossible to make out when you stood next to it but it became clear from the street. We had another great visit, can't wait to go back!

  6. Now, there's a place we DID get to visit, pre-RV. Loved our hikes in Arches and mountain biking in Moab, and like others, so glad we were there before the "explosion." You sure did manage to find and see things off the beaten path, though. I've had those grapes -- sooooo good! It's nice to see Lew taking his responsibilities so seriously :D

  7. We too love Moab but are glad we visited and ATVed before it was "discovered!" We love the Bluff, Utah area too and will look forward to seeing your photos. Love the photo of Lewis "holding down the bed." Emmi just spent three long days in the ATV and she is exhausted!

    1. While the scenery in Bluff is beautiful and accessable, the town "vibe" is the total opposite of Moab. It seems to have suffered much since Covid and, while Moab has responded by adding more outdoor restaurant seating and food trucks, little Bluff seems to have just turned inward. Not a problem for us certainly, but I wonder how it will continue to fare...sigh.

    2. Bluff does seem to struggle. We dined at a fabulous little restaurant in Bluff years ago when we were RVing in the winter. The bartender made me a little burro from grasses--I still have it. The restaurant only lasted one season I think.

I don't think there's any rock redder than in Moab - so beautiful!!! Glad you found some alone places to enjoy with all the chaos in town. We liked that little campground as well, and being out of the crowds. Your pics are beautiful - love the snake! Lew has the right idea on a hot day, and he's so good at his important job :-)

    1. Agreed! Unfortunately, the little snake didn't make it but I thought it was beautiful anyway.....Lewis always does the right thing!
