Borrego Springs

It seems like Borrego Springs, Christmas and New Years was a long time ago!   We're home now, we arrived here on January 2, and we've both finally recovered from the holiday crud.    I slept for two days, Dave sneezed and coughed and blew his nose.       The left-over Christmas decorations are down, both in Beluga and in the house.  (full disclosure - they're actually all in the garage,...I'll put them away next week).

Except for this beauty.    It finally bloomed just as we got home, and it's been going ever since!

Taos had his inevitable surgery this week.    He's handling it as he handles everything else.   He's calm and accepting of the "appliances" he needs to wear so as to not lick his incision.    He wonders why we think he would do such a thing if we've told him not to, but his is not to question.    You want me to wear this t-shirt or this inflatable collar?    Alrighty then.     What a guy he is.

So, when I last wrote, we were on our way to Borrego Springs, California for a week.      We arrived just as they turned the power back on, but we were on notice that there may be more Public Safety interruptions if high winds started up again.  Evidently the power company tries to turn power off to areas that may be in fire danger to try and mitigate some risk.        After what has been happening in LA, I can really understand this strategy.

The Springs at Borrego Resort was very empty at that time of year, as we expected.   So nice and quiet.

The only problem was that there was no cable tv available and no over the air reception (nearest towers are 100 miles away), so I had to become proficient in streaming and casting and whatever.     I don't like it, not one bit, but I figured out enough to keep us busy after dinner.     During the day we sat in the sun and read, explored the area and ate dinners out.    At the very beginning of this holiday rambling trip Pam said she wasn't bringing food, we were going to eat out every night.     I thought that sounded like a fantastic idea, a fantastic way to end the year, so we followed her lead for the rest of our trip!     I made our traditional Christmas Eve/day meal but that's all!    Fun!

We even saw Santa!     We revisited some of our favorite spots, off road, and showed Taos the huge metal sculptures scattered throughout the area.   He wasn't impressed.     What's the big deal sitting under a huge scorpion, or in front of one, or under a mega grasshopper?    Ah well, they ask, I do.

ho hum

We took lunches and wandered the desert.     It's what we love to do.

always a delight to come across water in the desert

lunch on a rock

We went over the mountain to Julian, CA. a couple of times to fill our freezer with Julian Pies.    We stopped at Dudley's in Santa Ysabel (twice!) for other goodies and ate linner at a sweet little spot called Jeremys on the Hill.   Taos loved it there too!

I think Santa was following us.....

We followed a flock of Snow Geese to Lake Henshaw but couldn't get close enough for a picture.    Entry to the lake appeared to be closed and we had a cooler full of pie, so we decided not to work too hard to get to the shore.     It's so nice to be able to just wander, turn here, turn there, stop here, lets move on.....no schedule.

Next stop - Desert Hot Springs and Palm Springs for a week - or two!

Here's Annie!

everyone loves puddles, right?

  1. She's a darling little one -- need more pictures of her for sure! And that Taos! What a guy. I'm gonna start calling him "Mr Perfect" because he's just got the best attitude and demeanor for a young guy. You've done a fine job with him! (But, ummm, hey, it's not YOUR first rodeo!) CindyP

  2. Annie is a special girl for sure! One picture at a time for now. You're right, it's not our first rodeo but Taos is his own guy and we're learning new things. A good thing, right?

  3. Is that picture of Miss Annie on Fish Lake Trail? Sure looks like it. I'm glad real life Scorpions are not that big. Taos, poor baby.

    1. The picture was taken in Manitou Park, above the pond. She and Jesse walk there often.
I'm glad that scorpions aren't that big either, Taos may not have been so chill about it then!

  4. Annie has the sweetest smile. Such a cutie. Poor Taos, how long is recovery from that? I used to do our boy cats in the lab, they heal almost instantly, cat skin is like that. Looking forward to more trip photos.

    1. Her smile lights up the room, as her nasty face makes people shake in their boots. I think Taos recovery will be relatively short. They say 10-14 days, but I can't believe it, such a tiny incision. Razor burn is the biggest problem! Stay tuned!

  5. Hi Sue…a big YEP…everybody loves puddles! On rainy days when I loaded bus riders after it rained, we all stomped in the puddles! So fun! Poor Taos. I really love the “surgery suit”! Do you know if they work for girl puppies…Lucy will be having her “surgery” in the spring. I keep saying everytime I read your blog or Jeff’s blog from Borrego Springs that we need to go there. We had to cancel twice when full-timing. I love the the sca of the rocks and Rocky. In the first photo the curves in the rock layers almost look like the shape of a jeep too. And the photo “lunch on a rock” is awesome! I just took a picture of my red beauty today too! Aren’t they so pretty?

    1. I have to think that these surgery suits work for females as well because I see many of them presented in pink! It's a game changer! You guys would love Borrego, so many places to explore off road! These amaryllis are so beautiful and so easy to grow!

  6. We have friends that chose to be married a the anticline! - such a nice drive out Fish Creek.
Fun that Taos felt no danger from the Scorpion of the Grasshopper. Both much bigger than him. Care to share the pies you selected to fill your freezer?
Your red beauty is a certainly beautiful! And Annie just keeps getting cuter!

    1. We love driving past the anticline, it just blows my mind! Actually I love that whole drive, so many places to stop and explore and.....eat lunch. First already baked pie was an apple/cherry crumb crust.....second baked one was strawberry rhubarb. Two frozen unbaked strawberry rhubarb pies in the freezer! Peanut butter cookies and an almond coffee cake from Dudleys.....burp!

  7. We too have never been to Borrego Springs or Desert Hot Springs--maybe now that we are closer? And we've never had a Julian pie--we must remedy this! I love Taos and must admit to a bit of dog behavior envy! Kayce can be so good but geez, she can be so bad too!! That grandchild of yours is so beautiful--that smile!

    1. We love Borrego Springs, little funky town surrounded by miles and miles of mountains and canyons to explore. DHS is a little rough around the edges but fun for us because of its proximity to so many places to explore and also the sophistication and restaurants of Palm Springs. Julian pies are soooo good. Plus, it's a fun trip from Borrego to get one (or two or three) Maybe I'd be persuaded to share a piece or two....

  8. I have major adventure-envy! I very much like Pam's meal-planning idea, and glad you continued it into the new year :-)) That Taos is the poster child for chill. Ask? Do! Love it :-)) Thanks for sharing that wonderful area - and water, yay!! Great lunch on a rock. Puddles are the bestest, and Annie the sweetest. Oh man, I have pie-envy too!!!

    1. It's fun to fly by the seat of your pants. It's not usually my MO but it was lots of fun and relaxation and no expectations, all good things. Chill is Taos middle name, didn't you know? I've now added Dudley's almond coffee cake to the "must get" list in Julian!

  9. It's so much easier to not have to pack up all that food. Glad you continued with meals out. A holiday break for you:) I love Taos expression or lack of in the photos. Wondering why these people think these things are so interesting. Haha! Love that drive to the Wind Cave area and beyond! Fun! Puddles and kids! A must! So cute:)

    1. It was great to continue the theme - eating out every day! Thanks for the idea, Pam! Taos does always seem puzzled by what we think may be interesting or scary or novel for him.....What a guy!

  10. Borrego Springs was always our winter camping adventure with friends when had a home in Ashland. We have so many great memories of that area—except for the time we ran over that stupid boulder, haha. I love seeing your photos! Seems like a lot of us like the idea of eating dinner out every night, lol. At least for a week or two! Taos appears to take anything and everything in stride. We couldn't keep Magnolia in her makeshift t-shirt after her surgery. She is definitely not as well-behaved as Taos. Annie is obviously having a blast...love that grin!

    1. Ha! I remember that boulder story - it was a cautionary tale for us all!
I had never heard of the "surgery suit" for dogs/cats but it was sure a wonderful thing to have....that and the inflatable collar. We used them interchangeably and he enjoyed the warm "blanket" when it was on and also enjoyed having his own, personal pillow while he was wearing the collar! Cats are different, I suppose.
