Onward

We returned Taos to Guide Dogs for the Blind in San Rafael, California on May 4. There he'll start the formal training to begin his new life, to fulfill his destiny.

Beluga seems quite empty these days, quiet and empty.   We'll get used to his absence, but he's left a pretty large hole.       I'll pass along updates on his progress as we get them.

  3. Oh boy, this is gonna be a really big adjustment, that guy has been such a big part of your lives these past months. Hang in there. Safe travels.

  4. it's really a huge adjustment. In the past when we've returned a guide dog that we raised, we always had another one at home. It didn't make us miss that dog, not one bit, but it did allow our routine to stay the same so we didn't have these "stabs" of memory as we go about our day.

  5. Always sad when you lose a pet, but you know that Taos will make you smile.

  6. Good afternoon Sue! What a mixed bag of feelings you must be going thru. Taos sure filled your home and heart with lots of emotions…love, companionship and purpose come to mind first, but I am sure there are many others. Thanks to you and Dave, Taos is headed for greatness and what a comfort that is. It is so awesome that you can stay in touch with the school and get news of his progress. Such a sweet and handsome and smart and kind puppy he was and what a great guide dog he will become!

  7. Awww...sigh. I know this was the plan all along, but I'm sure there is a mighty big Taos-shaped hole in your lives right now. You gave him such a wonderful beginning in life, and your efforts and generosity are a great gift to whoever will be lucky enough to have him as a companion. Take good care of yourselves. ❤️

    1. We signed up for this, but it seems like that was a long time ago! He'll be a wonderful gift to someone who needs him and we're glad we could help that person, no matter how hard it was to give him up.

  8. I give you two so much credit for investing all that time and love and then to have to give him up. But as someone said, Taos is destined for greatness!

  9. So much credit! As I have said before, I do not think I could do it. Barb laughed at your comment about not missing the hair. She vacuums every day, sometimes twice a day!

  10. Hair is a condiment in our house.......

  11. Our friends Rebecca and Michael have been fulltiming with two! Bernese Mountain Dogs - she also calls dog hair a condiment! I'll miss seeing Taos updates, but am also confident he'll make a real difference in the life of someone in need. I don't think I could take on a puppy ever again, although the site across from me has a tiny Aussie pup that is just too damn cute learning all about the camping life :-)
