Our slow, often nonexistent internet problems have been solved. It's been frustrating to try and post a blog, or anything else. We don't have satellite tv so our antenna reception wasn't much better than the internet! We were able to pull in one channel - and it's 4 affiliates. Needless to say, we're all caught up on old Twilight Zone offerings, as well as Superman, All in the Family, the Rifleman, etc....... On the plus side, I've gotten pretty good at streaming things - when the internet worked. Sometimes it would take an hour or more to watch a 30 minute program. We've also learned patience.
That problem is now taken care of. We're in Astoria, Oregon (today is Saturday) with blazing fast internet and plenty of tv. A beautiful golf course outside Beluga's window, cooler, non-smoky air, the ocean, the river and plenty of good seafood will make me forget Superman....
Summer is over and it was time to continue our slow trek home. We'll miss Jesse and little Annie, but - Christmas is coming, right?

Let me show you some pictures of the last few weeks spent north of Spokane and a bit of where we were along the way, before I get back to the present, OK?
Since our RV resort was on the Pend Oreille River, we spent lots of time on or near the water. Plus....it was very very hot. One day we couldn't take the heat anymore so, on our way home from the grocery store, pulled off the road and down to the river's edge, plopped our chairs in the shallow water and swam til we cooled off. Perfect!

We pulled out of the Spokane area on Tuesday morning, heading for Peach Beach RV. It's a small, sweet campground in Maryhill, Washington. Our site backed up to the Columbia River and was surrounded by peach orchards. Yum!

reflections |
We were only there for one full day and we spent that day eating and drinking....surprised? We drove up to Goldendale, where we shared a delicious lunch at the St. John's Greek Orthodox Monastery bakery. I had Spanokopia and Dave had something round, soft, filled with chicken, and something else, and topped with sesame seeds. I can't remember the name, and I probably couldn't pronounce it anyway!
On our way back to Beluga, we stopped at Jacob Williams winery and did an extended wine tasting. We've been there before and, once again, sat outside to enjoy our wine and the beautiful views. Hmmm. The last time we had a clear view of snowy Mt. Hood but this year, from the very same chairs, we saw nothing but smoky skies. sigh.

this year |
Back to the present.....today we headed north, over the bridge and back into Washington to try and find where all the old cars were going....Since we pulled into Astoria we'd been seeing a number of beautiful old custom cars and hot rods rumbling through the streets.
I found an address for what was billed as a "Rod Run" in nearby Ilwaco, or Long Beach so we set out on a mission.

It was a very cloudy day, or maybe it was fog. I'm not sure what the difference is on the ground. Grey and damp and cool.

We drove around, looking. Still seeing tantalizing cars occasionally. Where were they going?

oyster mounds |
We saw huge piles of oyster shells as we approached the historic little town of Oysterville...

We finished the day with a good local beer and a fresh haddock fish fry at SALT in the little port of Ilwaco.
It all loos amazing! Little Annie is so, so cute!
ReplyDeleteThe Dave and Annie pics are beyond precious!! Great memories for all. Yummy peaches beside the river, love it. And the golf course is always a perfect spot for that area. And Oysterville is a destination for us ever since Laurel recommended the fish store! That's a crazy lot of vintage cars and trucks - looks like everyone in the country was there. Did you rev the Jeep for the crowds?? Oh Taos look how big and handsome you are <3
ReplyDeleteDave and Annie play well together.....We didn't stop at the fish store, darn! No revving for us anymore....years ago maybe, but not now. A child did run up to us with a green plastic duck though, so we ARE still somebody!
DeleteHi Sue! What a wonderful adventure! It sure is a beautiful part of our country! And oh my…it would be camera overload on all those awesome old cars! Thank you for the update on Taos. He is a sweet boy and so smart! I am not at all surprised at how well he has done! Little Annie is so cute! I LOVE those curls and mud cakes are the bestest!
ReplyDeleteOne of the things we've learned in our travels is that there are so many beautiful places in this country. Beautiful and so different from each other. We're privileged to be able to explore them and don't take this ability for granted, not for one minute.
DeleteThere were so many cars that we couldn't find a place to stop and really look at each one! As a result, we got to "hear" them all and watch them interact with the crowds instead of just walking past them as they sat "posed" at the show.
Curls and mud - that's Annie!
We've stayed at that RV park in Astoria, it's a good one. Envy your cool clear coastal air, today was the 1st day that we have been smoke free here in Spokane. Thx for the update on Taos, looks like he's doing well. Holy smokies, Annie has a head full of curls! This is Jim D.
ReplyDeleteHi Jim! We've stayed here before and always have a good time. Today's weather was absolutely perfect! Mid 70's and sun beside the ocean is hard to beat! Jesse had a head full of blonde curls also, but Annie has him beat, I think!
DeleteWhat a wonderful Sept. You've been to some really neat spots. Of course the best part pf the post is Annie ans Jesse:) So sweet:) Love those blonde curls!
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to get on the road again, but....we do miss those curls!
DeleteI agree with everyone else, those curls of Annie's are so adorable! My guy would have loved that car show also, me not so much. So proud of Taos--I so hope he goes to a person who will know how special he is! It's interesting how the internet has become so necessary for all of us. We used to travel with antennas and boosters, now it's just our phones. On our last ATV trip we were without signal of any kind--nothing--for five days--that was hard!
ReplyDeleteWe saw a sign for another car show this weekend, different venue, so we'll be on the lookout for it again!
DeleteWe're on tenterhooks while we wait to see where sweet Taos goes, who he's paired with and what kind of life he'll have....
It is interesting how we all rely on our phones these days. We had an incident, just the other day, that reminded me of the importance of using "old" methods of information in conjunction with these newer appliances. A paper map saved us from an uncomfortable situation on the hilly streets of Astoria!
Oh, sweet Toas! Looks like you had a great visit. Love all your waterfront pictures. I am familiar with the channel you speak of with all those classics!
ReplyDeleteI have to say that I don't miss Twilight Zone! I realize that most of my blog posts involve either mountains or waterfront shots....I guess that's where we're happiest! Finger's crossed for our Taos....
ReplyDeleteI was checking often for your blog and then suddenly...I have four posts to catch up on. So yay!!! You've obviously been having a glorious time doing ALL of the fun things. I'm so glad to know that SALT is still around, and the Greek Orthodox monastery bakery, and Oysterville. So many great memories. I love that you say "yes" to life experiences, whether it's pulling off the road to cool off in the river on a hot day or just enjoying being caught up in a classic car parade. Taos is all grown up and as handsome as ever...and Annie is just so darned adorable!
ReplyDeleteWe went to SALT twice this trip. The location was great and the smoked tuna melt was memorable. We always try to take advantage of the monastery's bakery when we're in the area and this time was no exception. I think it's important to seize the day (or experience) when something presents itself, don't you? (well, with a few exceptions I suppose).
