Memaloose and family time in Seabrook, Washington

We left Spokane and headed south and then west to our end destination of Seabrook, Washington.     We passed through miles and miles of grain, most of it being harvested by fleets of combines.

acres and acres of blue and gold

We decided to break up the long drive by crossing the Columbia River and staying a couple days at Memaloose State Park in Oregon.      We'd been there before, in 2016, and found the park nice and the area interesting.     During that visit, however, a train derailment and subsequent black smoke and flaming fire caused I-84 to be closed while we were out sightseeing.    We had left Sasha and Lewis back in Beluga and couldn't get to them with the road closed so I prevailed on a police officer to PLEASE (I may or may not have been panicking.....) let us through to get to them.      He saw the wisdom to acquiescing and led us down the empty highway to the park and our waiting dogs.

Nothing exciting this year, thank goodness.    We relaxed in our shady, quiet site and took a drive south to check out the local orchards and vineyards.   Along the way we stopped and bought some produce and strawberry/rhubarb jam....mmm.

Mt. Hood was omnipresent, so we took a little detour to drive up to its ski/snowboard area.

On the way up the mountain we passed several beautiful waterfalls.

After our relaxing stay we continued west, back up into Washington and our site at the Lucky Eagle Casino RV Park in Rochester, Washington.    Beluga would wait there while we drove the Jeep to Seabrook and our time with Jesse, Erin and Annie.

The Casino's RV park was in the middle of nowhere and very basic but was well kept and secure.

The Airbnb in Seabrook was about 65 miles away and we arrived just after lunchtime.    What a sweet little house it was!    The community is very dense but was layed out in such a way that one did not feel crowded or "on display".     Our house had a nice front porch with rockers and a small, fully fenced back yard with a fire pit and hot tub.    The landscaping in the entire property was pristine and there were many wide, soft trails leading into the old growth woods across from our front porch.    Everything one could want was available, within walking distance.   Locally owned grocery store, pizza place, several nice restaurants, large outdoor and indoor swimming pools, pickle ball and tennis courts, a nice pet store (we found something that Taos didn't shred immediately!) ice cream parlor (and an ice cream truck circling daily) bakery, several coffee shops, etc.    The homes were all in different styles, but all were perfect - complete with twinkly light porches and private yards.

Guys!   did you forget me?  Can I come in?  Please?

Oh Dave....

We had a wonderful time with everyone.    Every morning Dave woke early (as is his normal habit) and so did Annie so they got to spend some precious time together while the rest of us slept in.     We ate together, walked the town together, drove to the beach and dug together, played together, s'mored together - nice.     Here are some pictures in no particular order......

It as a lovely time, over so fast.    Thursday we drove back to Beluga and Friday morning they drove back across the state to their home in Spokane.  You've all probably heard or seen the terrible fire in the Spokane area this weekend, but their home is not in the evacuation area and they are fine.

On our last day in Rochester (tee hee) we drove up to Olympia to have lunch with a woman we've known since she was about 18 months old.    She is the daughter of a friend, a woman I worked for years ago, in Rochester (New York).     I took no pictures, of course.    We had a good lunch and got caught up on each other's lives.  It was so good seeing her again.

Today we're in a favorite place - Astoria Oregon.   Stay tuned.....

  1. Jesse, Erin, & Annie certainly picked an excellent time to be away from Spokane. We're on day 2 of the Level 3 Evacuation for the Old Trails fire. We have been so fortunate, our home and community were spared the devastation that happened just to the West of us, so many others were not so fortunate and have lost everything. It has been a horrible two days for the people in the path of these fires and it is not over yet.

    1. We're so glad that your house was spared and so sad to hear of and see the devastation all around you. I can't imagine what everyone has gone through. Stay safe and get home soon.

  2. Hi Sue! What a wonderful post so full of sweet memories (and framable photos). The photo of Dave and Taos in the treehouse is way cool. And the foggy beach photo of Erin, Annie and Taos has a mysterious feel. I can’t pick a favorite of Annie as every photo of her is precious…but if I had to, it would be the last one of her in front of the fireplace.

About the marshmallow…Joe says “yes” and I say “no”. Gooey, but not burned works for me. Did you find all the sand dollars while you were there? And the wildflowers and trees with the ocean in the background is so pretty! Safe travels!

    1. Thanks Gay. There were lots of photo worthy memories!
I don't really like flaming marshmallows, but I do enjoy them perfectly tanned and gooey inside, if anyone asks....
There were more sand dollars on those beaches than I've ever seen! It almost became a "ho hum" situation! I've always been a collector and once had a Christmas tree decorated exclusively with sand dollars (from our Florida beach).

  3. I still remember the sand dollars on the window sill at Reservoir Road -- sweet. And I loved the Annie toes and Taos toes and somebody else's (?) picture -- she's a good girl and learning to be careful of others. Glad to hear that Erin, Jesse and Annie are not in harm's way. It was scary to see the videos yesterday of the chaos in Spokane -- and such a relief to chat yesterday. Thanks! Hope all is well with your continuing journey -- despite some "jello" changes for you and Dave. I trust you will stay far from harm's way. CindyP

  4. Oh those little girl belly laughs are priceless, so happy you had this special time together. Dave babysitting the toys is adorable. So much to love about this post, and the beach scenes are my favorites. All of them! Taos is such a lucky boy to have made his way back to his people, enjoying all these fun adventures. LOL at the Erin and Lego instructions :-)))) I can taste the Bowpicker fish just knowing you're in the area.

  6. I have been thinking of you and your family so much lately and following the devastation in Spokane … I am so happy your son’s home is safe. It looks like you found a beautiful place to spend time together. And enjoy your time in Astoria, we also plan several days there when our route south takes us that way.

    1. Thank you for your good thoughts. We're so happy they are safe but have friends who had to be evacuated and are still in a hotel nearby. Their home seems to have been spared, so we're glad for them. Astoria is one of our favorite stops, where do you stay when here?

  7. Great post Susan! I loved all the photos--those hydrangeas are so beautiful and lush! Enjoy your time in Astoria--going to the beach has crossed our mind, the smoke is so thick here today!

    1. the hydrangeas up there were spectacular, and they were everywhere.
We're loving our beach time, both on the river and the ocean. We can drive as far as we want to find just the right spot and watch the ships coming and going, fishing vessels and all the water birds.
Hope the smoke will soon abate. We just changed our routing to try and avoid it so.....finger's crossed!
