Uh Oh

During one of Dave's many walk around checks, he discovered that Beluga was bleeding!   Not gushing, but oozing.     Beluga shouldn't be oozing anything, especially in this heat, so he went to work mentally diagnosing, deciding on how serious a problem the red ooze was and how much time he had to fix it.

He could certainly fix it himself, but had no parts.    Should we wait until we get to Spokane and  make an appointment at a Freightliner dealer,  would the ooze become a gush before then?

We're in LaGrange, Oregon for a few days so we decided to check out the local Freightliner shop on the off chance that they could order a new radiator overflow tank for us and get it in before we have to leave.    We could, perhaps, stay here a little longer to facilitate a later delivery?

We must be living well because the Parts clerk here actually had ONE exact match tank for our "vintage" girl, in stock!    Our lucky day.

This morning, bright and early, Dave emptied our closet onto the bed, lifted up the floor and got to work.

He worked from inside and outside, going back and forth to disconnect, empty the antifreeze without spilling or dripping, remove the oozing tank and reinstalling the new one.   A couple quick trips to the hardware store for a new clamp, more antifreeze and a couple other small things and Beluga was good as new!    No more red liquid oozing from her back end.....and that's a good thing.

  1. WOW - that overflow tank is H.U.G.E !!! I doubt if our radiator is that big :)
Good thing Dave is handy and had the needed tools ... and a nice strong back. With Lew supervising, glad they could make quick work of it.

  2. How lucky to find the part indeed. It just took me two days and we had to drive 100 miles over to Abilene TX to score a much needed vintage A/C part!

    1. Yes, sometimes we luck out and.....sometimes we don't with these older MH's! Glad you were able to get your AC part, especially with this awful heat!

  3. Man, what luck to find the exact overflow tank, that almost never happens!! When ours let go in Show Low it took 3-4 days to get a new one. Excellent result!

    1. That was what we thought would be our result when we walked into the Freightliner shop. We never expected them to have one in stock - the parts guy was even surprised! Some you win, some you lose I guess!

  4. Red ooze from any back end is never a good thing. Glad it was a (relatively) easy fix!

  5. I swear I'm spending this entire Summer praying that nothing breaks on Barney. With all the parts shortages, I'm very worried about being able to fix anything of significance. You guys definitely lucked out! And it's good Dave found the issue so quickly to begin with. That could have been a real headache. Glad it worked out!

  6. Dave is very proactive and checks everything often. That being said, shit happens sometimes!
We were lucky that the one part we needed was in stock at a relatively small shop. Once we were stuck in Grand Junction, CO. and the part we needed was in Denver. We had to drive the Jeep all the way to Denver, pick up that part, and drive it back to Grand Junction to have the repair done. Delivery service would have taken 3 days they said......

  7. No one likes an oozing rearend! Haha! So glad Dave caught it when he did AND found a replacement immediately. The MH gods were with you! Good to hear the fix went well. One must be handy to own a MH.

  9. Whew! I love it when anyone has anything we need on the road. And of course you have the master of all things mechanical so all you need is parts - lucky you!!

  10. Dave to the rescue yet again!!! That's what I'm most impressed with, how incredibly skillful he is. If the part wasn't available, he probably would have made something out of a paper cup and rubber band. Oh, and I'm also super impressed by the size of your closet! :-)

    1. Yes, he is skilled in many things, and enjoys figuring out what needs to be done, then doing it himself. Now, if he could only figure out how to cool it off out here!

Beluga is an ample old girl as evidenced by her large closet!
