Astoria

In all our years of traveling by motorhome, we've never done it before...

We arrived at Ft. Steven's State Park, outside of Astoria, for a 5 day stay in a full hook up site.    We checked in, got our park map and proceeded to our assigned site.     It was small and muddy and on a very crowded loop.    Campfires smoldered in the drizzle.    Behind the site was a shallow swamp.  The only way Dave could shoehorn Beluga in caused our entry door to open into the deep, wet foliage and a tire worn mud hole.   Hordes of mosquitos swarmed us as we attempted to set up.     We've never ended a stay before even starting,  but there is a first time for everything.      We checked around the area, found a site in the nearby KOA and considered ourselves lucky to escape what would have surely been a miserable week in one of our favorite little cities.

the huge Astoria-Megler Bridge connects Oregon and Washington

We did more of what we've been doing all along the coast.       Eating good and local food, finding beaches and forests to explore, watching Ocean going ships and their river pilots, reading and just enjoying ourselves.    The weather was mostly good.    Cool and sunny with only a little rain and wind thrown in to remind us where we were.     There is plenty to do in the Astoria area,  museums, galleries, a wonderful music venue in the old Liberty Theatre, hikes, history, golf,  but we've been there before and done much of it before.    This visit we had a lazy, lovely time.

We found river beaches and ocean beaches.   We walked along the sandy Columbia River side to the jetties, we drove on the ocean beaches to put some distance between ourselves and any one else before we began our walks.      Lew loved both.

I was going to try and bring you up to date on this blog post, but the service here is very very slow, so I'll come back later to fill you in on our recent explorations.     We're in the beautiful Washington wine country in Prosser until Monday morning....so you know what we'll be doing until then, right?

  1. Prosser was my mom's birth home ... not much there then. Now some noted wines grow nicely in the area. Let us all know if you can pick a favorite.

  2. I will say again--I love the way you guys travel--enjoy! Loved that shell photo that looked like a butterfly. Love those empty beaches!

    1. It's wonderful to be free to do what one wants, when one wants it! Empty beaches are us!

  3. It sounds like you had a lovely, peaceful time in Astoria. Well, once you extricated yourselves from that wretched campsite! We have one favorite campsite at Ft. Stevens—a corner site with an enormous yard, with no one close by. (But it's not a full hookup site.) Although we love the park, especially the biking, I've always thought it would be miserable to be in the sites that are in the woods, crowded close together. From what you described, we would have left, too!

Blue Scorcher bakery remains one of my top favorite bakeries in this country. It's a good thing I don't have a bakery like that close by. 😜 Glad you guys are getting so much beach time. I know Lew is happy with your choice of activities!

    1. I guess there are a few "good" sites at Ft. Stevens and if we'd had time we could have found one...... We both laughed and wondered how fat we'd be if Blue Scorcher were our local bakery! Absolutely everything we tried was exemplary! They even make Kouign Amann on occasion. We've left the beach now, and we're all missing it I think!

  4. Fort Stevens has some of the worst campsites of any state park! The only saving grace of the wide open, ugly fish bowl of a site we had there once was the sweet social trail in the coast forest directly behind our rig. Sounds like you made the right choice!

    1. some people love it there, but it really wasn't for us, especially without bikes to escape!

  5. It is so wonderful for Lewis to be having so much beach time. That first site sounds like a little slice of hell. Sometimes it's better to cut and run.

    1. He does really enjoy the freedom and soft footing of the beach. We were very lucky to be able to find another spot or our stay wouldn't have been good at all!

  6. So glad you were able to find a replacement park after discovering the SP park wouldn't work. Sure sounds like you dodged a huge bullet there. Astoria is a very nice stop. Glad you were able to get your yummy fish and chips. A perfect relaxing travel with beautiful water views and walks. Love sound of the waves. It's so calming. Seeing Lew chewing sticks and trotting along the shore brings a big smile to my face. Enjoy your weekend of wine tasting!

    1. Yes, we were lucky. The KOA wasn't ideal, but we were happy there. Lewis really does love his waterside walks. Remind me not to do three wine tastings in one day will you?

    2. I was wondering about all those tastings. Each tasty was pretty hefty. Haha!!

  7. I think it eventually happens to everyone who RVs a great deal -- or even just travels -- arriving at your site or hotel and saying, "Nope!" Always lucky to have a Plan B work out so you could salvage your soothing beach time. Lew is a super-good driftwood chomper! And, hey, don't do three wine tastings in one day.

    1. We're always surprised at how interested he is in sticks, even if Dave throws them out into the water....a stick is a stick and must be chewed I guess! We've settled down to one winery visit a day....good?

  8. Eesh, so glad you were able to find another place to bail to! Although we always stay at the little golf course when there, I thought I wanted to stay at the SP next time. Sounds like we'll stick with our usual and just visit the SP during the day. Thanks for sharing the fish and chips, they look amazing - and we won't go to Astoria again without having some. Love all your exploration pics and seeing Lewis having such a wonderful time. That shell is such a stunner in the dark sand. Enjoy the wineries - pace yourself!

    1. We've always stayed at the Golf Course too, but the last time we were there, we had to put old Sasha Marie down. We were afraid the memories would be too tough there this time. We decided that next trip we'll put our big boy pants on and book a site, it's really the best place in the area. We're enjoying the wineries and have remembered why one a day is plenty!

  9. It’s Gay…thank goodness! As if the muddy pothole wasn’t enough, the swarms of mosquitoes would have been unbearable. So happy you could get a last minute change. Joe says the fish and chips made his mouth water…yummy and one of his favorites. Lewis and his sticks make for a fun time and I love the photos of Lewis and Dave walking the shore line. Totally agree, the shell has a beautiful glow against the gray sand…great capture!

    1. And....there was no where to walk without detouring around all the pick ups half parked on the roads....ugh. Tell Joe that those fish and chips were the best in the world....my mouth waters even thinking about them. Usually fried things give me agita but not this version. Lewis divides his time between Dave and I as we walk down the shoreline. If one of us turns back, he has trouble deciding who to follow...poor boy. The shell was pretty, wasn't it, thanks.
