Florence

I need to keep more current on this blog, I forget what we did last week, what we saw, what we thought, what we ate!

Today we're in the front row at Harborview RV Park in little Garibaldi.   This is a great small park with well tended grass and gravel sites, wonderful management and a fantastic view out the windshield.

scenic train on it's way

We're near train tracks, but they are a pleasant addition to our experience.    A small, scenic train pulled by a steam locomotive takes passengers around the bay in vintage passenger cars.    Instead of the normal roaring diesel and blasting horns  we're treated to the sounds of the old locomotive and it's steam powered horn signals as they pass by and out of sight.

Our drive here from Florence on Friday was extremely unpleasant.   Dave dealt with rain, wind, ocean mist, narrow roads with sharp drop-offs right on the white line and plenty of traffic (Fifth wheels, loaded log trucks, etc.)

We arrived in a downpour and Dave had to angle Beluga sharply in the site to keep us from stepping out into a rapidly forming lake......

We've enjoyed a mixture of heavy rain, fog and even some breaks of blue sky and warmth.    Our stay isn't a long one and we really only had one decent day to explore the area.    The forecast was for a short break in the precipitation so we decided not to take the 60 mile Three Capes Scenic Loop.   No fun trying to see through the fog/drizzle and no hopes of getting out to hike to the viewpoints.

As we drove into the area on Friday I saw a HUGE building in the distance.   AIR MUSEUM was painted on the rusty side and we wanted to go back and see what it was.

It turns out that this museum is housed in an original Navy air base dirigible hanger.    We drove back to check it out more closely.

It was enormous!   I looked at the list of planes on display inside and we both decided it wasn't for us.    The planes were nothing out of the ordinary and the museum didn't look very well kept or interesting.   I may be wrong but at any rate, we continued on our way.     We realized that we just aren't motivated on dunkel days...we seem to be more apt to pass things up rather than exploring under grey skies.

We drove past the Tillamook Cheese Factory but there was a ridiculously long line of folks waiting outside and we're still not in to sharing experiences with that many other folks so we continued right by. The recommended Blue Heron French Cheese Company didn't look much better.   sigh.

Luckily the skies cleared late yesterday afternoon and we enjoyed a sunny happy hour, loving our  view from Beluga's front seats (it was too chilly to sit outside).

We had a yummy dinner (take-out) from the Garibaldi Portside Bistro, just a short walk away.    Today, surprise, it's raining again so we're staying in and taking care of business.    We leave in the morning, heading for Ft. Steven's State Park, near Astoria (fresh Tuna fish and chips at the Bowpicker - drool)    It will be our last stop on the Oregon Coast.

So....Florence.   This post is titled "Florence" so let me go back to it.....

We've been there many times before, it's one of our favorite places.   Plenty of ocean beach access, the Suislaw river,  fantastic, changing sand dunes, pretty Adirondack looking lakes, good grocery shopping, a number of great restaurants (ice cream too at BJ's) and a relatively short drive into Eugene (for their legendary farmers market)  plus, the sweet spots available at the Elks Lodge's dedicated campground (Judd Huntington Recreation area) make it a no brainer for us.

  1. We had the time to do the Three Capes Loop in much better weather. It is a scenic all day adventure if you make the stops at the viewpoints.
Shallon Winery is a fun stop if you are going to the Column. Tell Paul his San Diego friends say HI. He's a wealth of information too of all things in NW Oregon.
Great picture of Dave in the Adirondack Chair. How'd he get up there?

    1. We started the loop, intending to do just a portion of it, but came upon the washed out road part so then totally gave up! I just read that the Shallon Winery is permanently closed.....sigh. There's no end of the things that Dave can do!

  2. I'm going to have to call bull-pucky on you forgetting where/what you ate. You have so many delicious-looking favorite places with favorite dishes when you get to them, that I can't believe you'd forget! Now, as always, I'm HUNGRY, and would like some of those hazelnut dates and a fluffy poodle to keep me company while I nosh :D

  3. It’s Gay…what wonderful pictures Sue. I always enjoy photos of Lew and Dave always has a way of showing how big everything around him is. The water droplets are beautiful an the tree trunk covered in moss and fungi is amazing! We never visited the Oregon coast…so I have enjoyed seeing I thru your lens.

  4. Looks like you had sweet weather in Florence - we never stop there without me thinking of you two! So many great photos! Love the shelf fungi and under the bridge - lots of interesting things to see when we have the time :-) So bummed you got rained out in Garibaldi but at least you had that special view and the lovely steam train. I just don't understand the draw of the Tillamook cheese factory as every thing there you can buy at Safeway. I'm so glad the bistro is doing well and still serving tasty vittles! Darling seal, what a great catch. Since we missed Bowpicker the last two times in Astoria be sure to share yummy pics :-)

  5. Totally agree about Tillamook.....Bistro was "slap your chest, fall back in your chair" good! The sweet seal just popped up in the river, took a long look at us, and then submerged and disappeared. I'll have some fish and chips at Bowpicker for you. I won't save it for you, but I'll think of you when I'm eating it, is that good?

  6. We've only been to Florence once and so glad we made the stop. Well, it was mainly because we needed a new turbo thingy in the MH and had to wait for the part to arrive. Eugene (We were at the Cummin's dealer) was too hot so we headed to the coast. Ahhh, perfect and cool. I remember that beautiful bridge. Sorry you didn't get a whole day of sun for the Loop drive. Next time! Love seeing Lew on the beach enjoying himself. Sticks (or whole dead trees) are such fun. Your photo through the fog of the lighthouse is perfect!!

    1. Lew does enjoy himself on the beach....not like when he was a pup, but still enjoys it! The lighthouse shot was totally accidental! I loved how the sea mist was moving in so fast and the contrast it made with the high bluffs. When I put it on the laptop I saw the Heceda Head Lighthouse!

  7. Your Florence photos are lovely!! That little seal poking his nose up is adorable. Rainy days are good sometimes aren't they but driving a motorhome on narrow, heavily traveled roads make cloudy, misty days nerve wracking! When I think of Florence, Oregon I think of pack rats which we acquired in our motorhome bay while camped in a state park there--not one pack rat but two--it was a nightmare!

    1. The seal was a real surprise....we were just standing there looking at the dunes across the river and up it popped - looked at us a good long while and then went under and disappeared. Sweet! Ooooohhh, pack rats....shudder..... Sorry that's your abiding memory of Florence.

  8. Wonderful job on making that area look so appealing, alas, Oregon is a lo-o-ng way away. Thanks for sharing all the great photo-op's (including the food shots!!), I love seeing all about it. Linda

    1. The Oregon coast is a magical place from south to north. Driving on 101 in a big motorhome in inclement weather is no fun, however....

  9. Beautiful captures Sue, love them all fog and all. It brought back lots of great memories when we were there on our way to AK in 2012. And like you rain was our constant companion which seems has not change since ten years ago. And you are right that Air Museum needs upkeep and sprucing up. We had a great time speeding thru in a dune buggy along the Sand Dunes in Florence. That pic of Dave on that high architecture is the best! - ML

The Oregon Coast truly is magical! That campground you found in Garibaldi is definitely going on my list. What a great view! Sorry you had some not-so-cooperative weather and weren't able to do the Three Capes Loop. But I know you'll return! We discovered that it's often foggy and rainy and cool when it's hotter inland...but it looks like you also had beautiful weather, and you made the most of it. We're suffering in the crazy heat dome in Alabama right now, with no relief in sight even as we head further north. Ugh. The Oregon Coast, even in the rain, sounds much more appealing! And now I'm really hungry reading about your meals...

  11. I guess no place is perfect, right? We're enjoying what we have in front of us (wishing, just a little bit, that it would be a little brighter and less wet though ) but it's still beautiful and delicious and we're happy. Enjoy your trip and safe travels! I look forward to a real time blog to see where you are and what you're doing!

  12. I'm with you 100% about the weather. Gray and rain just suck the life out of me. The blue sky/sunshine pics are way more my speed. Still, it's always beautiful up there.

PS: Those strawberries at the farmers market look incredible!!
