April

Lots of things bloom in April.    It's a beautiful month, one of Dave's favorites - he's a flower guy you know.    April convinces the Argentine Giant to show us what it's been working on all winter.....

Several (actually 13!) huge, fragrant, simply stunning blooms have formed and opened within the past week.

Oh Dave.....

We also have several cheerful little "volunteers" springing up in our stone yard.   Sometimes I wonder why I bother to buy pots of these pretty violas, to water them and keep them fertilized and in the sun, to cover them when it's cold,  when they seem to prefer the bare gravel yard with absolutely no attention whatsoever.

April is baby time here in the desert.  Lots and lots of little cottontails are scampering around the rocks behind the house.  Birds are getting frisky; eggs are being laid.   When Dave moved the trash can the other day he found this nest.

We assume they are Quail eggs but aren't sure.   No one has claimed them, we've never seen a parent nearby but there are 4 more eggs now than there were in this picture.   Hmmmm

Taos is growing and changing.    He's still a sweet, smart, adaptable and loving little guy but is beginning to enter the pre-teen age, you know what that means.

get out of the closet Taos!

out of the bathroom Taos!

We've developed methods to keep him busy and moving in the correct direction.

hands hold coffee cups, feet hold dog bones.....

Second cup and happy hour outside have taken on a new look.   We've learned strategies to enjoy our beverages and conversation without a thousand interruptions, while keeping him happy and close by.    Learning new things is good, right?

We take every opportunity to socialize him in a safe way and have attended several club (Guide Dog for the Blind Phoenix Northwest Area Club) meetings.   During these meetings we're often asked to switch dogs/puppies.   This is to accustom them to other people and, perhaps, different ways of working.   We've been happy to see Taos adjust well to someone else.

good boy, Taos

You can't help but love this puppy.     He carries the perfect birthmark..

see the little pink heart?

April is also the month for the NHRA Arizona Nationals Drag Races at Firebird Motorsports Park in Chandler, AZ.     Dave and I are race fans, both drag racing and NASCAR, so when we found out what would be practically in our backyard, we jumped at the chance to attend.

As it turned out Steve and MonaLiza Lowe were also excited to get to the races, so we made a fun weekend out of it.     First, we dropped Taos off at a puppy sitter arranged by the GDB club.    One of the nice things about this group is that they encourage you to take the dog with you wherever you travel, but if it's not practical they will happily arrange for someone to puppy sit.    We didn't worry one bit about him because we knew he'd be having as good a time as we were.    His sitter took him for a ride in a wagon and also let him greet parishioners at her church!

where are we going?

After we settled Taos at Judy's home we proceeded to our hotel (we booked two nights there so we would not have to deal with race traffic when we were tired - and also so that we could have a couple nice dinners with friends!).     We met at a small tablecloth restaurant near the hotel, The Hidden House.    Great dinner, great wine, great conversation, great friends.

The next morning, we left for the track at 7:30.     We wandered through the pits and watched the crews ready their cars for the days runs.    It's an impressive operation.  I took very few pictures; we've done this many times before.   Look at the Lowes blog if you want to see the cars!      We watched some early runs, wandered through the "Midway" where everything "race" is sold (bought a few t shirts) and practically anything unhealthy to eat is sold.   Oh well....churros and pizza for me!

watching the dragsters stage for their turn at the track

Legend, 74 year old John Force signing an autograph before racing down the track at more than 300 mph!

It was a wonderful day of racing.   The weather was perfect, coolish and sunny.   The wind was blowing from behind us - a important plus because the clouds of tire smoke and nitromethane didn't envelop us each run.      Well, there was that one time our eyes burned and watered but, hey, it's the drags!

We were at the track for about 9 hours and we had dinner reservations at the nearby Cooper's Hawk Winery and Restaurant, so we wiped the black specks off our faces, straightened our clothes and went straight to dinner.      We all had wonderful meals, a great waitress, and LOTS of complimentary wine.   I don't remember when we spent such a long time at the dinner table, laughing, talking, eating and tasting wine.   burp....

Sunday morning, we had a light but yummy breakfast at LeMadeline Cafe and then headed out for a big surprise for Steve.    Long story short, Dave had arranged a meeting with one of Steve's rock and roll idols, Lou Gramm - from the band, Foreigner!     Lou is from Rochester; his kids went to school with our son and Dave bought a beautiful 67 SS 396 Chevelle from him back in the day.   Lou is a big car nut, as are Dave and Steve.     Lou visited with us for a long time and signed a beautiful photo of Steve, MonaLiza and Tam, the 69 Firebird Trans Am that has been keeping Steve (and Dave) happy and busy for quite a while now.

Steve, Lou and Dave

thanks for the photo MonaLiza!

Next up for us is a short Beluga trip to Catalina State Park in Tucson.    This will give Taos a chance to acclimate to motorhome life and visiting new places before we all head north for our summer get a way.    Stay tuned.

Here comes Anabel!

  1. We did have a great, wonderful weekend! Dave outdone himself with the surprise! Wow so many moving parts yet he made Steve's wish come true. He is one kind of a man of so many talents. Steve is still playing Lou Gramm until now and I am now a Foreigner fan.
Love that pink heart! And oh, thanks to you I also have several volunteers in our yard.
Annabel seems to have a mission, with that look in her eyes. - ML

  2. What a great trip! Dave certainly coordinated a fun surprise.
Taos is looking good, much more relaxed than tenacious Annabel

    1. It was a really fun time, so good that things worked out - it was touch and go for awhile as Lou's flight was cancelled originally! Relaxed is the name of the game for Taos, that is, when he's not getting into mischief!

  3. What a fun post Sue! First off, I’m in love! That is the sweetest birthmark on Taos I have ever seen. What a special puppy he is. Your photo of Taos in the bathroom gave me tears as our sweet Dover always joined me in the bathroom after my shower. She was convinced it was her job to lick my legs and dry me off. The photo of Taos in the closet is my favorite! Then there is Miss Annabelle crawling already…my how she is growing. I so love all her expressions! You all sure know how to have fun and enjoy life. I have already told Joe I have to have an Argentine Giant Cactus…it’s beautiful! And if my memory serves me right, you found it in your yard…how cool is that? Already looking forward to getting home and seeing you three! Please tell Taos I love slobbery kisses!

    1. Taos was does exactly that....tries to lick you dry (?) as you step out of the shower and....he dives, head first, under the clothes in the closet, then....silence. What is he doing in there?
We bought the Argentine Giant, it's a beautiful thing. You're probably thinking of the Queen of the Night cactus that we "found" out back. No blossoms on that old girl yet, but she's still alive! Taos gives lovely, sweet kisses so get ready!

  4. Thanks for posting, I look forward to your far too infrequent posts lol. Love your blog, I have read every post. That grandbaby looks so much like Jesse, the eyes have it! I just love the way you write. The blooming cactus, be still my heart. Taos so smart. Dee

    1. Thanks for your kind words....seems there isn't as much to blog about now that we're not traveling as much. I still enjoy showing our friends what we're up to, makes them not seem so far away. Dee?

  5. That cactus is gorgeous! And fragrant, even better! It looks as though Taos has grown a lot just in the last month. So funny that he rummages around in your closet. Magnolia does the same thing every night before she gets into bed with us. I have no idea what she's doing, but she's having fun, haha. I love that Taos has that little heart birthmark. ❤️

What a fantastic weekend you guys had with ML and Steve. I can only imagine Steve's delight at meeting Lou Gramm (Foreigner was one of my favorites back in the 80s). And that four-hour dinner sounds fabulous.

Annabelle is adorable and very focused. (Am I spelling her name incorrectly? My auto correct insists on "Annabelle," but is it "Anabel?")

    1. He doesn't seem to be doing anything wrong under the clothes but....who knows what I'll find when I pack up for the summer trip!
I think Foreigner was one of the favorites of lots of people of "our age"!
Baby girl's name is correctly spelled ANABEL. Autocorrect is not always correct!!

  6. Those blooms are beautiful! Great picture of the close up. My mind said "quail eggs" even before I read it. That would be cool. Seeing Taos really makes me want to get a lab or golden pup nice time. We already decided on a non or low shedding breed. Dakota is the worst shedder we've ever had.

    1. Yellow Labs really shed, but oh, what they give you in return..... in the non shedding catagory, we can't say enough about a well bred standard poodle. They cost no more (even less) than a mixed breed (poodle and golden, lab, Bernise, etc.. etc.) and you get such a fabulous dog. Why mix the perfect dog with anything else - perhaps to deal with the foo foo image of a pure poodle. Check out how many standard poodles there are in field trials! Off my soap box now....sorry!

    2. And schnauzers--three sizes and they don't shed. We have considered a rescue but I just can't go there--don't want to deal with shedding. So--there may or may not be a new addition to our family soon! :) :) :)

  7. Standard Poodles are the best. I love to watch them walk, they prance. Anabel is beyond darling and looks so determined in her travels. The Argentine Giant is a gorgeous cactus, you took some nice photos of it.

    1. I agree, and they're so much more than they look - most people don't get past that. They do prance, I love to walk next to one on leash - head and tail up! Anabel is nothing if not determined and cute! Can't wait to see her this summer.
We were so surprised when we saw that many buds and then, when they opened, - WOW!

  8. That is one gorgeous cactus--miss those beautiful blooms! Taos is too sweet--puppies are the best and one with a heart shaped birthmark--I love him! Anabel looks mighty serious about that crawling business. Enjoy your travels!

    1. We were really surprised and happy with the "Giant's" performance, this is the first one we've had. You're right, puppies are the best! Anabel is a determined but very cheerful little one, can't wait to see her this summer.
New addition eh? Looking forward to our visit with you this summer......

  9. I definitely need to join the club and get an Argentine Giant. The blooms are gorgeous. Love your photos of the various stages. Love Taos's little heart. Sweet and so is he. What a fabulous weekend at the races with wonderful friends. Glad all worked out and the weather was perfect. Super surprise for Steve:)

  10. I think you'll really enjoy the cactus, it's a nice hearty green thing and those blossoms are spectacular - fragrant, but not overwhelming for you. You're right it was a perfec weekend for us all!
