a surprise

When I lifted the bedroom blinds this morning I got a surprise!

Yesterday we hung a bird seed feeder in the tree outside the window. Sometimes it takes the local residents a little while to find the free food.   There were no takers yesterday, but today there were lots of hungry birds.   There were some white crowned sparrows, a California thrasher or two, some doves, house sparrows and the usual assortment of seed eaters.

But there was someone else today.   A house finch brought a very unusual friend along for breakfast.

At first I thought it must be an escaped canary that joined up with a mixed flock of sparrows and finches.    I looked on line and realized it was not.

I've decided that lowly Mr. house sparrow managed to score an exotic, mail order bride and they were on their honeymoon in Palm Springs.    Any other ideas?

We had plans for today, several options were being discussed.   In the end, we spent too much time talking and it got too late to go anywhere worthwhile, so...

We walked over to the 100 degree, jiggly mineral pool and jiggled the afternoon away warmly...

  2. It looks like a finch that is white but not albino. I can't remember what that is called. What a lovely addition to your feeder guests!

    Happy soaking!

  3. hmmmm, no idea but very pretty all in white. I love that feeder, something I need to find before we get to Borrego next month! Bubbling Dave is just the best shot yet :-))))))

  4. I would say it's a leucistic house finch -- meaning it has no pigment in the feathers, but normal pigmentation in feet and eyes. Very cool! And that bubbling hot spring looks mighty appealing!

  6. Wow, what a beauty you've got there. An albino finch :( no....
And Laurel got the right id, the bird is just like just like the white squirrel and white deer we saw in Florida. They lack pigmentation so they are unique and cool to look at.
