Friends and blue skies

We continue to settle in, making our old "lake" life fit into our new desert life.

bringing the teak back to life

We've been fortunate to have made some good friends on the road and Tuesday we were able to welcome six of them to our new winter home base!    Jodie and Bill, MonaLiza and Steve, and Pam and John were able to come together for a long awaited visit.     We decided to make it a progressive dinner of sorts, MonaLiza and Steve hosted us for Happy Hour at their home and then everyone piled into their cars and came here for dinner.

yes, we see you Tessa.....

We realized that all of them purchased their homes, furnished.    We did not.   No furniture in our main room.    It was too chilly outside (yes, chilly in the desert is a thing) to eat there so we made due by pulling the umbrella table into the livingroom, beside our lovely cardboard fireplace (although John managed to make our TV into a fireplace complete with crackling sound effects) and we all laughed and talked and ate and drank and realized how lucky we all are to be able to be together.    There was one particulary spirited directional discussion among John, Dave and Steve, two of them were wrong.....

yay!

Lewis got presents!   Gramma Pamma brought her usual pockets full of treats and Miss Tessa brought him a dead rabbit.    We got goodies from Jodee and Bill also!    Fun.....

After everyone went home we used our dishwasher to make clean up a breeze....not usually an exciting activity, but the fact that we've never had a dishwasher, ever, so it was the cherry on top of our great day.

The next morning Jodee and Bill continued on the rest of their  motorhome trip and we had a late breakfast with Pam and John on their way back to Boulder City.    We had another good meal at tiny Nichols West in Congress, sitting outside and enjoying the beautiful Arizona blue skies and their patio cat.....

love those blue Arizona skies....

No, we didn't eat the patio cat - he sat there politely watching us eat, ocassionally meowing quietly when he thought our conversation needed his opinion.

After breakfast (or was it lunch?) we drove into the desert to try and visit a couple of Pam's old friends.

She has a great love for the rare crested Saguaro and keeps track of several of them as they grow and change.    We made our way to one particularly old and beautiful one that she hadn't seen since 2017 but we were so saddened to find it's majestic head had broken and crashed to the ground.   Nothing lasts forever.  Sigh.

Before (thanks Pam)

after
His beautiful head on the ground, returning to the desert....

We took a few dirt/rock roads to locate another one that has evolved quickly from just the beginnings of a crest when she first discovered it, to what it was that day....

Now that we know where it lives, Dave and I will watch it's progress.   Another good excuse to get out in the desert, if one really needs a good excuse.

So, that's all I have for now.    We're scheduled for our booster vaccine next week and we'll continue to make this house our own.      And....we'll continue to honor sweet Lewis's subtle suggestions....

  1. I sincerely hope we can have another one of those gatherings this winter! Pam and John, Bill, Jodee and Tessa have been to our house--now we need you guys plus MonaLiza and Steve (do they too live in Wickenburg?) Love your porch swing. It's always sad to see those big crested saguaros blown over. We've been to another one in Wickenburg, out behind the fairgrounds--I don't think you could jeep to it, we rode ATVs and the trail was rough--that one blew over too a couple years ago. We know where some more crested saguaros are south of Wickenburg that can be reached by jeep, I will have to go back through the blog to find where they were.

    1. The highlight of our fall! I'm glad we haven't lost touch with friends, they make life rich. Lew was just telling us how much he enjoyed spending time with you again, and...at HIS house!

  4. I love your swing! We had to leave ours back in GA as there wasn’t room in the storage unit. Joe often asks if I want another one and after seeing your, I might just have to add it to next years list of projects. We have always said that the people we met during our years of travel were definitely the icing on the cake! What a fun get together…you all look so happy!

    1. That old swing has been with us through thick and thin and was in bad shape from sitting out on the porch at the farm and in the sun at the lake. Teak comes back so nicely and Mr. David's A-1 Refinishing and Reconditioning Service did a wonderful job. We love swinging with a cup of coffee in the morning.....

  5. The group dinner looks really fun. Your desert is looking good, it was so great that monsoon finally happened this year after two years of no rain. If you're ever in Tucson, there is a beautiful crested cactus on the UofA campus close to Old Main.

    1. Yep, everything here is pretty green. Glad the monsoons happened and glad they happened while we were in Spokane! The U of A crested is on our radar already!

  7. That's a shame to see that beautiful crested saguaro lost its head.

Looks like a really fun group! If y'all aren't busy week after next...

  8. Fun times in Wickenburg! and was happy our friends came to visit us. Sad however of the demise of the beautiful crested saguaro. I bet strong wind got it last year when it was so dry.
Did you happen to ask if Nichols West will continue on despite Simon's passing?

    1. Yes, we talked to our waiter and he told us that Simon's former partner has come and will run the restaurant in the same way, 7 days a week, in Simon's honor. Yay!

  9. Oh, what a wonderful gathering of good friends! And how amazing to think that ML and Steve live so close to you that you could actually host a progressive dinner. You sound so happy in your new life in your beautiful desert home. I'm looking forward to your updates as you continue to make it 'yours.' We miss you guys!

  10. It is nice to have neighbors that are old friends! We miss seeing you two (three now I guess!) too but it sounds like your travels won't coincide with ours for quite awhile :(

  11. OMG we haven't laughed that much in ages!!! Thank you again for making it happen for all of us. So sad about the crested cactus but back to the desert is eventually inevitable I suppose. I'm glad sweet Lew likes his dead rabbit :-))) Love those bright umbrellas under the bright blue sky.
