From California to Oregon to California to Oregon......

From our winery stop in Grants Pass, Oregon we made our way back into California on twisty, turny Rt. 199.    Our next stop was at Ramblin Redwoods RV in Crescent City.     We enjoyed a beautiful site nestled in the giant Redwoods typical of the area.

We explored the stunningly blue Smith River and drove into the Redwoods on Walker Road.   We ate lunch on Kellogg Beach with sweet Lewis and had dinners in Crescent City at the Fisherman's Restaurant (our favorite Halibut Fish and Chips) and at the Crescent Seafood on the docks.     Each morning started out gloomy and dark but we soon realized that it was just the marine layer creeping into the deep dark woods.   We emerged from the campground into dazzlingly sunny days, highs in the high 60s.

stony Smith River beach is hard on an old guys feet!

even tipped over they are huge and beautiful

the burls were so interesting, as beautiful as the trees they came from

Lewis had a great time in Crescent City.    We took him along a number of times so he could have some new and interesting places to sniff and run (well, sort of run) along the soft sand.    He screamed with joy when we lifted him out of the Jeep and set him down, sans leash!    He quietly snuck up on resting seagulls and shooed them away.    He dug in the sand, he chewed sticks and pieces of driftwood   He shared our lunches and snored loudly when we got home.

a Jeep entry to Kellogg Beach!

he thinks they don't notice him coming.....

Even after the busy days,  he still gently and quietly insisted on playing a few minutes of ball with Dave while I washed the dishes.   We didn't mind,  he became our evening's entertainment since we had no cable or antenna tv in our wooded site.

pay no attention to his old man teeth please, he's sensitive about them.....

He patiently put up with the new games we invented to "keep his mind active" and a new way to deliver his happy hour and second cup treats.....

find the treat

In an effort to find just one more ball to fill the cupcake tins, I discovered one of his old favorites.....He'd almost rather have that than the tiny treats hidden under the balls....

Our time in Crescent City flew by and before we were ready it was time to leave.    After a short and windy drive north along the rocky coast, we arrived at tiny Irelands RV Park, right on the ocean in Gold Beach, Oregon.

two hands on the wheel day....again

We drove in, picked out site from one of probably 30 mostly empty spots, set up then drove over to the Gold Beach Inn to announce our arrival and pay.     Good services, paved and relatively level sites, great cable tv, path directly down to our own beach, sunsets from Beluga and steps from the Rogue River.   Sweet.      After looking the weather report for this holiday weekend (rain, fog, rain, fog)  we decided to extend our stay here through the weekend.    Why drive in the wind and rain when we have such a good place to be?       We've had a couple pretty nice days but this afternoon, as we drove back into the campground after brunch, the forecasted weather began to creep in.....

the fog comes in on little cat feet.....

rainy days are made for couch snoozes, right?

We'll be here until Monday, stay tuned.....

    1. We knew this kind of weather would catch up with us eventually, it's typical of the coast. Expected, but not welcomed! Monday will be better....

  2. Great blog! Are there many people out and about? We've heard Yellowstone is packed. I've never seen the Redwoods--loved your photos! Lewis's favorite ball is Emmi's favorite ball--she looks for that silly thing everywhere if it's not out in the middle of the living room rug, waiting for me to stumble over it. We love our fur babies so much--Emmi has those same kind of teeth too--ball playing the vet said.

    1. Thanks Janna. No, not many people around at all. But, it is before Memorial Day on the coast of Oregon and the weather isn't really what most people like to vacation in! We expected cold and wet weather so we've been lucky up til now.....

  3. It’s Gay…once again another wonderful post full of beauty and love. Those redwoods are magnificent and Dave compliments them well! Great for perspective too! But Lewis, as always, steals the show and my heart! Lewis’s and Emmi’s ball is also Jacks favorite ball and we all panic when it can’t be found. So happy you all had beach time. And couch snoozes are a fave around our home too!

  4. Lewis has many favorite balls, as you can see. He selects a different one each time, and won't play with any of the others after that selection is made. I found that "chuck it" ball in one of the basement compartments and he was overjoyed to have it again. Tomorrow the fav. may be the green one! We're always shocked by the Redwoods, by their sheer size and majesty and our reaction to walking among them....

It does me good to see the Oregon Coast. We've spent so many happy times on the coast...so many weekends in Crescent City, Bandon, and Gold Beach before we started traveling full-time (they were close to home). The Smith River has always been one of our favorites. As you said, the blue color is astonishing! I'm glad Lew is enjoying his best life. :-)

  6. The coastal redwoods are always a favorite! The Elk should have been about, did you see any while you were there?
All of the Oregon Coast is a great place to experience, it's not just beautiful, picturesque, but also accessible.
Looking forward to your continued safe travels

    1. We didn't see any Elk at all, lots of perfect places for them though! Accessibility is what we love about the Oregon coast.

  7. This is ML using iPad to comment, hope this will push thru. Love that pic thru the giant trees, that’s frameable! Steve says Ireland Cabins was where he used to take a break from work for two weeks! Before Betsy we also took a road trip in Gold Beach and stayed at Irelands.

    1. It seems you're not the only one having trouble commenting lately, thanks for your persistence! So you both know exactly where we are then, right next door....great spot.

  8. The Redwoods site makes me already long for the road -- a peaceful, beautiful site. Oh, joy! I think just about everything in this post looks perfect, even a bit of fog. We're looking forward to some of those locations in our "someday," so this will be a great reference for then!

    1. That site was really lovely, except it was pretty dark under all those trees, lamps lit during the day dark! We did have a great time though, and are still, power problems at this campground notwithstanding......

  9. So fun to travel with you through these wonderful places we love. Great pics of the redwoods and web and burls and Dave's trees! Great that Lew is having such a good time playing out and about. That looking up pic is priceless. Glad to see Ireland's is a hit. Not a Gold Beach fan per se, but we thought we would try them next time. I'm a big fan of foggy and chilly :-)

    1. I was surprised to see the "looking up" picture on my phone at the end of the day.....Dave took it! I'm really liking Irelands RV Park, but the minute I said the services were good, the power went out....Dave took the entire surge protecter apart, looking for a problem but it turned out to be the power podium. We've moved sites....sigh Sunny today, ah. We're not fans of foggy and/or chilly for more than one day.

  10. I love your spot in the Redwoods. I will definitely check that out. Don't forget a site photo at Gold Beach if the weather clears. The Redwoods are so spectacular!! Love the photos especially Dave sitting in the opening and then looking up at the tall trunk covered with moss. It's nice to see Lew out enjoying the daily trips, as well. Sweet boy:) Hope you were able to get at least a couple decent days.

    1. Nothing is perfect.....I love this little campground but we lost electric at the podium today and had to move sites....maybe 50 feet. Dave spent a portion of his day trying to figure out if it was "us" or "them". Turns out it was them..... Ah well, at least it wasn't raining!
