road, rail, river - a western theme..... |
We drove along the Columbia River for awhile before turning north, up and over the golden Horse Heaven Hills and down into the green Yakima Valley.
We stayed at Wine Country RV Park, a large and well kept park with decent space between sites and all the amenities one might expect. The office hosted several wine tastings by local vineyards during our stay. Their license required the drinking of wine be confined to the inside the office and that no alcohol be taken outside to the patio area. Had we known that before we purchased our wine glass/tickets, we would have decided against it. The wine tastings were very well attended, to say the least. The office area was packed with happy people, drinking wine and eating platters of cheese and crackers left out on the bar for everyone to help themselves. We were uncomfortable and left before finishing and didn't attend any of the others during our stay.
We were in Prosser to taste wine so we spent the next few days doing exactly that - and having a jolly good time doing it! We tasted outside on lovely patios with expansive views of the valley, one patio under a whispering pine, next to the vines themselves. We tasted wine with lunch, with cheese and crackers, with nothing but our own company, and in the company of a couple of very interesting "pourers". One woman was the mother of the new owner of an previously established winery. She watched his children, poured wine at their tasting room and chatted with guests while her husband worked in the vineyard. Said son was busy working at his "real" job as a Nurse Practitioner. We tasted wine in a dark, atmospheric tasting room in a strip mall. We, (Dave) smelled roses wherever we went.

OH DAVE! |
Between tasting and sniffing we drove around the area and marveled at the acres and acres and acres of grapes, and apples and cherries, and peaches, and hops and blueberries right up to the edge of the yellow round hillsides.
All under the shrouded but watchful eyes of Mt. Adams and Mt. Rainier.
On our way to one winery (which we never actually found....) we took a long detour out into the golden hills looking for Gravity Hill. There are many such "hills" in the world, ones that appear to be up but are really down... Since this one was relatively on our way we (I) decided to find it and see if we would really roll uphill....
Someone had helpfully painted "start" on the road where one should put one's vehicle in neutral in order to roll UP towards the spooky old grain elevator. Dave humored me and did as told and....we rolled all the way UPHILL to the building!
He couldn't leave well enough alone, however, and had to tell me, multiple times, why the Jeep did what it did. I understood right away, but geez! Just enjoy the moment! Ah well, he's an engineer to the bone.
Through a mix up on the campground's part, our last day was Monday. Tuesday morning we packed up and left our happy wine country blur and headed north to little Ephrata for a few day's stay.
see us? |
Prosser should adopt that slogan! Those first four pics are so creative - just love the tree dots across the hilltop :-) Weird that you couldn't be outside with the wine and glad you left the crowd behind. Sounds like all the wineries are wonderful. I don't know why other places can't do the same beautiful settings. Regardless of all that "made up" engineering stuff, those gravity hills are totally magic :-)))) Love your fun-house pic of Beluga, but am not a fan of those shiny reflective trucks. Hope you get to Banks Lake (I love that area) without any fire and smoke - too, too early!
ReplyDeleteWe drove along Banks Lake today, what a fantastic area this is. We'll be sure to make a return trip. The fires were contained so we had clear skies. You're right, way too early.
DeleteFond memories of Ephrata where a family member why dad's best friend had a boat repair shop We'd all meet up at Soap Lake for Opening Day. Sad to see that it is burning :((
ReplyDeleteFun stories to go with your wine tastings. Looks like you found a few to take along to your next adventure!
The fires have been contained Jeff....phew! But, this is just the beginning of the "season". Nice memories for you here...
DeleteIt’s Gay…oh my goodness, I bet you planned all along and saved space just for the wine. The wineries are so pretty and it makes me wish sometimes that we enjoyed wine enough to make those stops. It always looks like so much fun and so relaxing when I see your photos. Gravity Hill is way cool…totally agree with you! Beluga looks quite at home under he willow trees. Sure do hate to see that smoke.
ReplyDeleteDave is a good packer....and if it comes to wine, he can always find room! The fires were contained by this morning, so keep your finger's crossed, this is just the beginning of the "season". We had clear skies for our explorations today but we took Lewis along, just in case....
DeleteDrinking wine outside on a patio is way better than being inside with a bunch of other people. Fires??? Way too early for that!! Safe travels--onward to Spokane.
ReplyDeleteWhen we went into Safeway, just a few miles down the road from Beluga, the sky was clear and by the time we finished, the sky was filled with smoke! Very scary. Luckily the were able to get the fires under control. Where's my wine?
DeleteBeautiful winery stops. But those are huge pours. I would have been under the table. Wow! I love those lone mountains in the NW. They appear to be floating. Sweet spot to wait for your Spokane arrival. It's been a long time since you've seen Jesse and Erin. Lew will be so happy to see his brother. Safe travels tomorrow!! Say hi for us!
ReplyDeletemost of the pours were much smaller but at the first winery we only had a taste of 3 wines, thus more of each! All the wineries were very careful not to actually give us more than a whole glass of wine altogether so if we tasted 6 wines, each taste was tiny. A good thing, I think. Thanks for the good wishes, we'll say hello for you....if they make it back from their vacation without any plane cancellations!
DeleteWe've been in some of those weird gravity defying places and I need Dave to explain to me what the heck is going on. 😜 We also would have bailed on the "office wine tasting." But all of the rest of your tasting experiences looked fabulous! You two do live very well, indeed. Stay safe, fingers crossed no smoke filled skies this summer out west. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteIf you were here, I'm sure Dave would be happy to explain it to you....but it's no fun to know! From your lips to god's ears, no smoke, no smoke!
DeleteI agree with Gay about wineries and tastings look so appealing that it makes we wish I drank. Glad the fires got handled -- let's hope it's a low fire season this year. I need Dave to explain why the Jeep did what it did! I just absolutely love the Rose Robber photos every darn time!
ReplyDeleteIt's hard not to love that Rose Robber and his partner, the Flower Filcher. I'm lucky they visit often.
DeleteWe are finally entering some wine country where we should be able to enjoy some wine tastings of our own!
ReplyDeletecheers!
