Friends, Family and Food tour begins

Friends - We had a delightful outdoor Easter Dinner at MonaLiza and Steve' home.  Later that week we met them for an outdoor lunch at Nicols West, before we hit the road for our 5-6 month summer trip.

First stop was one of our favorite places - Catalina State Park, north of Tucson.    It's a difficult park to get reservations at and I was able to score three mid week nights so we were happy campers.

Friends?    We had an unusual visitor at second cup one morning.     He stayed for about 10 minutes before continuing on his way.

It was a curious guy, stopping to check things out along the way.....not us, just "things" that evidently interest a snake.

He (in the effort to not discriminate - it may have been a she) checked out Beluga's headlight and finding nothing interesting there, he (it) continued along beneath and out alongside the Jeep, stopping to check out a rear tire.

Dave let his coffee get cold so he could watch it pass by under Beluga

It was surprisingly (to me) beautiful and very non-threatening.    I guess as long as a snake doesn't startle me, touch me or rattle at me I'm ok with them.       So much for our morning entertainment.

Since we were so busy preparing for a 5 or 6 month Motorhome trip, we're taking it easy (in the exploration department) for these first few stops.      One of our reasons to stop in the Tucson area was for Food.

Food - Vivace's Fish Soup was calling Dave.    And a sweet little baby boutique across the street enticed me to make a first grandma purchase.....

happy man with Fish Soup

can you say "cowgirl"?

We missed having a Sonoran Hot Dog in Wickenburg this year, so we headed to one of the best places to have one in north Tucson.....El Guero Canelo.

out of focus because I had to be quick....someone was tapping his fingers.

nom nom nom

In the interest of taking it easy in the beginning of this trip (and possibly walking off those Sonoran dogs...) we drove to Madera Canyon and took a little stroll along the stream.

We were on alert for birds but only saw Acorn Woodpeckers, Mexican Jays, Turkeys, Nuthatch, and some Broad billed hummingbirds at the Santa Rita Lodge feeder stations.     My little camera couldn't capture any photos and heaven forbid we step in front of one of the big honking cameras wielded by several gentlemen.   Instead, we just enjoyed watching them flit from feeder to flower to feeder.    Later on we noticed a single Coatimundi walking around under the feeders, it was limping and didn't look well.

Mostly, we just strolled and enjoyed the sounds of the stream and birds overhead.    Can your body get too much trytophan from a hot dog ????

my favorite lizard

Friday morning we continued on to Las Cruces, NM where we have a beautiful sight at the KOA.

From Beluga's windshield we look out over the city and the distant Organ Mountains.   Stunning, day or night.

Food - Last night we were planning on going into the old town of Mesilla to visit a favorite restaurant, La Posta (in a national historic landmark building) I was feeling a bit under the weather.   Instead we drove in and got take out so Dave could still enjoy a wonderful New Mexican burrito and sopaipilla for desert.   No photos were taken, take out containers are not photogenic.    Note to self, sopaipilla lose their appeal when "taken out".....

Today I was feeling a bit better so we drove around a bit and enjoyed the area.

We enjoyed brunch/linner at A Bite of Belgium.  We sat outside in the warm sun until a table opened on the small outdoor patio.

Oh Dave.....he couldn't resist

Food and service were exceptional, including the Mimosas!    Dave enjoyed a Southwestern Florentine Benedict and I had a Liege Waffle, Bacon and Fresh Fruit (pretty prickly pear mimosa too!)

Tomorrow morning we head out again, into the wide state of Texas.    Stay tuned.

  1. That snake was huge! I've never seen a rattler that big. Have fun on your summer adventure, I can't wait to read about it.

    1. I don't think it was a rattle snake, I wouldn't have been as calm if it was. Perhaps Jodee/Bill will chime in with an identification - a Gopher snake maybe?

  2. Sounds like a great beginning for a Friends, Family and Food tour. We have never had fish soup, but I can sure agree a Sonoran Dog is a must have when here in Tucson. Love your first grandma purchase…

    1. Fish Soup, Cioppino, Bouillabaisse, whatever you call it, Dave loves it! We were going to try your hot dog place (BK, maybe?) but came to Canelo first. Which do you prefer?

    2. I do prefer BKs dog…it’s a bacon thing. I prefer the bacon be really cooked and not white in color and BKs is always perfect. Next time you are in Tucson, we must all go to BOCA for tacos, salsa and chips!

  3. Now that was a BIG snake! Nice that he was just curious. I've never had a Sonoran Dog, it looks like I am certainly missing epicurean delite!
Stay safe on your travels, I'll be looking forward to your adventures.

    1. Yes, a Sonoran Hot Dog is a must try. And you'll just have to believe me, there was a hot dog down under all those other goodies!

  4. OMG -- my jaw dropped at the Grandma/Grampa purchase!!!!! Love it. This will be such an exciting adventure and it's great to have you guys on a 5 month tour again. I'm glad that Dave watched that snake go under Beluga but was there a plan if the little snake checked out the underside of Beluga AND liked it?? I'm shocked that you're hitting TX tomorrow -- won't be long before you hit the East Coast. Plans are developing .... Cindy

    1. I did briefly wonder what we'd do if the snake decided that there was something of interest in or under Beluga or thought it looked like a good place for a siesta....ah well, crisis averted. Texas is a HUGE state, it will take us a long time to get across so don't start holding your breath yet!

    1. Catalina is a very popular place, its a good thing the sites are large and well spaced so you don't feel crowded. I was so happy to score a spot for a few days, we even left early to take advantage of an opening! We're happy you're coming along with us Janna!

  8. It's always fun sharing a holiday with friends. You'll need to share your flourless chocolate cake recipe with me one day. That will be the first of many purchases you'll make for that grandbaby. Being a grandma is the best. Safe travels on your summer adventure.

We'll make some when you visit in a few weeks. :-)) We're so excited to know that you're on your way. It looks like you had a wonderful send-off with ML and Steve. 10. Glad things are moving along smoothly, well, except for your little upset. Glad it didn't last long. Looks like the food part of your travels is off to a yummy start! I'm not fan of "all" your friends!! Those long skinny ones are not my favorite. Love the Grandma purchase! The perfect pattern from you:) Safe travels through Texas!! It goes on forever!

So fun to be back on the road again with some perfect first stops to get started. See, you knew your visitor was a Gopher snake! He was a beauty for sure. We love Las Cruces - especially La Posta - and were amazed at the views from that KOA last year. That pink Mimosa looks so tasty!! Looking forward to seeing where you get up to in the weeks ahead.

    1. This was the first time at the KOA in Las Cruces and we loved the views through Beluga's windshield. I'm sorry I didn't get to eat in LaPosta this year, but at least Dave had their delicous Burrito at home. A prickly pear Mimosa is my favorite for flavor and looks!

  14. I'm late, but you're off! I wonder if that Coati is the same one that was hanging around when we were there last. I'm sorry to hear it doesn't look well, dang it. So much of our old favorites -- The Lowes, Picacho, Las Cruces, Madera. And, holy buckets, you guys find the best food!
