We started to get ready for the holidays at home. I ordered a live Christmas tree and Dave put up his favorite Christmas decorations.....I did a little cooking (but no cookies....) attended a car show where Tam was the star, and received a text from Pam that led to some fun holiday wanderings.
French Pizza (JoAnn's recipe) |
Pam and John were heading to Lake Havasu State Park for a quick, two day vacation to see the lights, did we want to join them? DUH......of course we did!
site 2, seen from the water's edge |
I quickly got online and was able to snag a waterfront site for three nights instead of two! Yay. Thus began our holiday wanderings.
Three days of visiting with dear friends, eating out each night, exploring the desert and walking amongst the Christmas lights. It turned out to be a perfect time to visit, most people were home, getting ready for the big day. We almost had the place to ourselves.
London Bridge by day |
Dinners beside the London Bridge. At night it was lit up beautifully!
We took a few desert drives, one looking for the infamous Desert Bar.....an off grid, middle of the desert bar with live music, dancing, and..... We discovered it was only open on weekends, but we enjoyed the journey, nonetheless.
Another time we drove along the Bill Williams River, looking for what we could see. The road ended rather unceremoniously, and we headed back the way we came.
We drove across the Parker Dam (after taking a few photos), discovered a whole family of wild Burros, complete with cute little foals and a memory rock wall where people had left small tokens and painted stones in clefts of the rock.
ahem..... |
Someone wanted an unobstructed picture of the whole dam and found a "way" to do that. Dave and John turned their backs so as not to be complicit in the guard rail breach.
love those fuzzy ears! |
On our last evening, after dinner, we walked along under the beautiful Christmas light displays, along the river. It was magical and a perfect start to our holiday. There was even one spot where a machine was shooting out "snow" for kids and they were having a snowball fight!
Thanks, Pam, for a wonderful idea and for including us in it!
We had such a good time, and this was just the beginning. The next morning, we turned Beluga toward one of our favorite places - Borrego Springs - to continue our fun and impromptu holiday celebration.
I'll end this post right here. Dave is a little under the weather today and I'm going to join him for a nap. Stay tuned for the rest of our holiday.
Here's Annie!
What a great way to spend a few days! That is a unique area, so much to do. And bonus, you got to do it with John and Pam!
ReplyDeletePam had a great idea, and we were so glad she wanted to include us!
DeleteI love love me some burros, great shot of the guy with fuzzy ears. Annie is really a heartbreaker, lovely child. Happy New Year to you two.
ReplyDeleteThe mama burros were more than willing to let us visit with their kids, all were very curious, but we respected the fact that they are wild. Some of the adults even had the zebra stripes on their legs..... Thanks Jim, Annie is a real character!
ReplyDeleteOh my…those Christmas lights are awesome! And London Bridge is quite pretty! What a fun get away with John and Pam. You are the only connection I have with them as they don’t blog anymore. I too like the fuzzy ears on the burro. But, Annie takes the cake! My goodness she is so cute and growing up so fast! I love the curls and those precious little hands.
ReplyDeleteLake Havasu certainly does it up right at the holidays! It was a real fun three day getaway that morphed into over three weeks! Pam still posts on FB these days.....
DeleteIsn't she a doll? She's very into carefully taking things apart and then putting them back together again....
Oh, what fun to spontaneously join Pam and John for a holiday adventure! The lights are so festive and the burros are so cute. Best of all is the "ahem" photo, hahaha!! It looks like Annie got a sled for Christmas!
ReplyDeleteIt was fun, (thanks Pam!) and the jumping off spot for a three week. unplanned holiday! She did get a sled and her first snowboarding experience!
DeleteThat Pam! Always pushing that envelope! And the two guys with backs turned ... Lake Havasu looks stunning at Christmas. A fun retreat from Wickenburg for a bit. And Annie! That little girl is beautiful and probably a bit willful at this stage. Bet you can't wait to see her this summer -- they change SO fast at this age. Wow! Hope Dave feels better soon! CindyP
ReplyDeleteThanks Cindy, Happy New Year to you and Walter. We're SO looking forward to seeing you in the spring. Pushing the envelope is a good thing, right? Yes, we can't wait to see the little girlie this summer, although FaceTime works when we're a long way from her (them).
DeleteThat's a way to celebrate Christmas--as I stare at the Christmas tree this morning thinking now I have to take the thing down!! Beautiful lights in Lake Havasu and dining out every night--I could handle that. So glad you guys enjoyed your holiday, hope Dave recovers quickly and that Annie is so cute--love her pajamas!
ReplyDeleteThe worst part of Christmas is taking it all down and packing it all away (and remembering how it all fits in the boxes/bags from whence it came! We've been gone since Dec. 9 and I've only cooked two meals (same meal, two nights in a row)! Best Christmas gift ever.....
DeleteHavasu sure knows how to show of for Christmas! What a fun impromptu outing.
ReplyDeleteWe cam into Borrego a couple days ago for a week, so we missed you by a few days.
Grands are indeed grand and Annie is sure a cutie!
Enjoy Borrego for the New Year. It was very quiet while we were there. If you have time, check out the Coyote Steakhouse for dinner - we ate there twice and it was lovely. Ramon took good care of us. Haha! Grands are grand! I love it!
DeleteHard to beat a spontaneous adventure any time of year, but Christmas is perfect in an area where the weather is unlikely to be a factor! I bet there was no doubt in Pam's mind that you two would be ready to join them :-) LHC looks like they do wonderful lights - how fun!! As little as it looks, it's hard to believe Parker is one of the tallest dams in the world. Love, love the laughing burro foal and the kids in the falling "snow". And of course the precious Miss Annie under the tree is the best gift of all. Happy New Year to you and Dave and Taos!
ReplyDeleteAdventures are great, spontaneous or planned, always fun! I didn't realize that Parker Dam was that tall, it doesn't give one that impression! Hope your holiday was grand and that you have everything that makes you happy in this New Year!
