Wet times in Arizona

I'm not complaining, really, I'm not.     I understand that rain in the west is a good thing, something to be celebrated.    The desert is green, my plants are very happy and we need rain.

I do, however, love the blue Arizona skies.   I love the sunshine; we all love it.   It's one of the reasons we moved here.    My lizard is happy when its sunny and he's warm.     I know it's winter.    It's been raining on and off for a week now.   Sometimes a sprinkle, but most often a deluge.     Last week, in the course of two days, we received 6 inches.

Our house sits on an island of sorts.   When it rains hard, we're surrounded by rushing washes.    They aren't terribly deep, but deep enough that Dave had to hop on a passing neighbor's truck running board to get back to the house from the Beluga building.    Yes, the neighbor stopped first.

the wash between the house and Beluga building

wash running behind the house (it even has a waterfall!)

the wash that is our road....

I'm not complaining.    Being on an island isn't all that bad.    The washes dry up relatively quickly but.....   Wickenburg's normally dry stretch of the Hassayampa River was a raging torrent, sweeping away two vehicles and calling for a swift water rescue of the occupants.   In another close by area another man wasn't so lucky, and his body was found 6 miles downstream.       These haven't been ordinary rains.

These storms tease you.    They pull away leaving you with rainbows and fantastic cloud formations and confidence that the blue sky will return in the morning.

Lately though, they've regrouped and come back again.    I'm not complaining, just explaining.

Our sweet Taos does not like rain.  He never did.   You probably remember Dave's creative efforts with the hose to help him get used to it.

Actually, it's his only fault.    He will not go out (on his own) to take care of business if it's raining in any way.   No matter how much we coax.

let me back in the house, please?

We've had to resort to clipping on a leash and "accompanying" him into the yard to accomplish the necessary business.

I'm not complaining, really, I'm not.    This wet spell can't last forever, and we do have a nice cozy fireplace to warm and dry us.

Oh dear, here it comes again.....

At least Annie is happy when it rains at her house!

  2. Wowser! Those washes!!!! So nice of that neighbor to "rescue" Dave. And Taos really did land with the right family -- sunshine and blue skies for all of you! CindydP

    1. they're wild and muddy but they don't last long! I saw our neighbor approach the running wash and I also Dave deciding if he was going to try and walk through it, so I was glad that Justin stopped and gave him a ride!

  3. Hi Sue! You have had way more rain than we have had. Sally was the same way about not going out in the rain! I had to pick her up and carry her out and stand there with her…the joys of being a puppy parent! And today on our walk, it started raining out of nowhere…the sky was blue with gray clouds way off in the distance. Anyhow, I love the photo of Taos in front of the fire…so cozy and warm. And how sweet and content Dave and Taos are! Fingers crossed for sunny, warm days soon!

    2. We've never had a Lab (or Golden for that matter!) that hated water, so this is new territory for us! Yep, Dave and Taos are best buddies and so very happy. Annie is a real cutie, loving whatever the weather is as long as she can get down and dirty!

  4. Look at those two, so comfortable in each other's company. I knew it, he faked failing the "kennel " situation so he can go home back to you! Yes that rain was crazy, like you we also had running water behind our house and the gushing was very loud that Betty could hear it from her house. And we had another half inch today. Love it, our plants and the desert are so happy. I can see we will have a colorful desert this spring. As always Annie is so darn cute!- ML

    1. Hmmmm, it never occurred to me that Taos would fake his kennel woes in order to get back to Dave and the fireplace! Ah well, he's here and way happy now.

    2. You guys got almost all of it, we had some here in The Old Pueblo, but not nearly that much. Storm track has moved North & West of us.

    1. I wouldn't exactly say I love the rain, but I have learned to appreciate it. However....enough already! Thanks Janna, we're happy to have him back too, he's just the right dog for us in this stage of life.

  6. We did not get as much as you guys did. It was an interesting storm, actually had thunder and lightning. Today the sun was back, but the air is still cold. I guess Taos would have been a fair weather guide dog only if he'd settled in the kennels. It's amazing how much he loves Dave.

    1. We also had a bit of thunder and lightning with the storms. Really unusual weather for this time of year. We often talked about how (and where) he'd lead a person if it was raining. He follows obediently but when given half a chance, he ducks back to the house! Dave is a loveable guy!

  7. Some scary times around the river there, hopefully it subsides soon! We have been enjoying the last few days of sun ☀️

  8. Our company phase is over so there should be plenty of sunshine now! What a pain having visitors and little sunshine. That's not how it is suppose to be. It's been several years since we've had enough rain to fill the pool to the top. At least the birdbaths had an automatic fill! Maybe we'll get some winter blooms from the rain. Taos just needed a fireplace and a totally attentive dad to be happy. That's not too much to ask after all. Good to see the boy back to living his best life. I'm sure Annie is thrilled to have rain and lots of water to splash through. Her friend looks a little hesitant.

    1. I know! Sunshine is what visitors come for, and we feel bad when they don't get it! Ah well, the sun is out again and we're all happy, even Taos. He's a lizard like Dave!

  9. Clearly not complaining. Clearly! Although it's not often the case, it is definitely a plus being on an island above all the rushing waters. Oh Taos, those other labs are just silly enjoying being in water! He and Dave are just too much, like there was never any time apart. I'm sure he's as happy to be back with you, but as the photographer.......less proof :-) Miss Annie is the poster child for the joy of being outdoors.

    1. I guess we don't really mind that Taos doesn't like the water. We've lived with our share of perennially damp dogs that smell like an old bar rag..... Annie absolutely loves being outside, rain, snow, mud, whatever!
