Christmas!

zzzzz

Christmas Eve was a lazy time around here.     It was raining hard with low dark clouds.   Flood warnings flashed across the tv regularly.     We enjoyed the down time, dozing, reading, watching Christmas movies, dozing.....   I made our traditional meal of baked Manicotti, and we enjoyed a slab of caramel macchiato cake, left over from a meal at Restaurant 849.

The weather forecast had been threatening heavy, flooding rains and wind for Christmas, so we got out and did a bit of off roading and eating outside before it closed in.

One day we drove south to Mecca, CA and off into the nearby desert looking for the Painted Canyon trail.     It's been on my list, but in the past, we've always said that it was a little too far from Palm Springs/Desert Hot Springs and also too far from Borrego Springs.  Places we often find ourselves in.  This year we decided to just go for it.     We're glad we did.

The rock formations along the wash were fantastic.   We always marvel at the variety of shapes and colors of just mud!

We found an interesting looking pull out for lunch.

Taos always enjoys these stops, but this time he got out for a look see without a leash!    The joys of no longer being in training.    He even got crazy scoots in the sand, but I couldn't get a picture of it, I was too busy trying to keep from being knocked down.

here he comes!

There's always a price to pay though.    He posed politely for pictures wherever I asked him to.    Good boy....

After lunch we continued our drive through the colorful canyon.

We stopped at various spots to stretch our legs, two and four.

do you see him?  I yelled "wait" and he stopped to strike a pose

We drove in as far as the trailhead, then turned around and headed home.  Our knees aren't up to the interesting hike that was beyond a rudimentary parking area.  I understand ladders are part of that trail!     For us, it was definitely all about the journey not the destination.

I never mind returning by the same route.   I always see different things in each direction.    On our way back I spotted what looked like a crack in the wall of rock.   A slot perhaps?     Dave and Taos stayed in Rocky while I squeezed in to see where it might go.

It went a long way!   After scrambling up three or four pour overs I decided I'd gone far enough alone.    No cell coverage, of course, and, while the walls looked stable, one never knows.    I'm sure that if I was gone too long Dave would have come looking at me but I turned around, butt scooted down the pour overs and emerged into the sunlight just where I'd entered.    Fun!

All our good times have not been out in the rocks and sand, however.   We enjoyed a delicious linner on Restaurant 849's beautiful white on white patio.    They are enthusiastically dog friendly, so Taos was able to join us.

My birthday dinner was at The Farm.   It's no farm, to be sure, but a lovely, mostly patio French restaurant.    One of our favorites.

Dessert was a small slice of cranberry cheesecake with a candle and two complementary glasses of champagne with a raspberry float.    Perfect ending to a delightful celebration.

Beautiful, fragrant white birthday flowers arrived earlier in the day.    Jesse and family never forget, no matter where I am on the day.

Here's Annie enjoying the Christmas boxes!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all......

    1. Children + Christmas = excitement! Taos has very short spurts of energy but they're always fun to see! New cheesecake topping for me too, but way good!

  3. It was good to see Taos playing with another dog, whose name escapes me at the moment. I didn't realize when he was in training that he always had to be on a leash. This is much better for him. Annie is adorable as always.

    1. Taos got to play with other dogs at the school, in the kennel setting so don't feel too sorry for the big guy. With us, he was on a leash and could only fraternize with a dog that we knew wouldn't give him a bad experience. At any rate, he's having the best time of his life now and little Kayce gave him a run for his money in the soft grass!

  4. Just realized that you were likely getting hit by that atmospheric river, such horrible weather. Taos has truly found his humans, happy dog! Happy belated B-Day and Christmas. That picture of Annie in the box is hysterical, munchkin in a box on Christmas, doesn't get any better than that. Cheers!

    1. We're high and dry here but the main roads into PS have been closed due to flooding. It was beautifully clear and sunny today however.
Agreed, Taos was meant to be our dog (actually....Dave's dog)! We're happy all around.
Kids and boxes.....why buy any other present! Cheers to you add Alison, and happy new year.

    1. Glad to hear there hasn't been much rain there. Dave just got our part of the road in decent shape; heavy rain washes all his hard work away and Beluga lurches along home!
I love that picture of Annie too!

  6. The colors and variations in that canyon are so wonderful! How fun for Taos to get out there on his own. Certainly his photo model duties were worth the adventure :-) Love the frowny face in the rock. Your little slot slides sound fun too. Glad you survived the deluge!

    1. I suppose one should expect beautiful colors on a drive through the "painted canyon" but we were blown away by the variations and shapes. We're expecting a little more rain this afternoon....of course because we have dinner reservations outside! First world problems.

  7. Great canyon!! I'm sorry I had just read about the car vandalism prior to our visit to Palm Springs back in the day. It's supposed to be a spectacular canyon and hike from the photos. Glad you finally made the drive. How exciting for Taos to just be able to run free. I need to visit and have fun with him in the desert. Great photos of him! Glad you had a nice birthday celebration at one of your favorite spots. Why do we buy expensive gifts. We just need to wrap boxes! Great photo of Annie in her world. Enjoy the rest of your Palm Springs visit.

    1. I didn't see any comments about vandalism back there so perhaps it was an isolated case or no more than at any remote trailhead. At any rate, I'm glad we took the time to drive out there. You'd love it.
I guess we have to buy the gifts to get the boxes!
Despite the rain and a lurking cold, we're having a fine time.

  8. I forgot two things. I LOVE that photo of Taos with Dave holding his paw. Taos face is too precious. And...you explored and hiked alone. How cool that were able to investigate the slot!! Glad you got there. Way to go!

  9. As you know, Taos just melts when Dave touches him....sweetie pie.
I didn't plan on going into the crack very far, but you know how that is! Just a few more feet, just a around the next corner......

  10. Happy birthday to you! I have one coming up in a few days as well. We babysat at 3 year old lad for a few days last week. We did it a year ago or so and said "Never again", but circumstance dictated that we take him for a few days. Training and discipline are so important for any dog, but young labs especially and this one had no boundaries at all.

    1. Happy Birthday to you! I know only too well, the antics of a 2 or 3 year old Lab or Golden, and yes, training and discipline are paramount. Our big guy (2 years old tomorrow!) is the first dog we've ever had that didn't follow that time worn path. He's as chill as an old dog with very low energy levels. We cheer when we see him cut loose and run (if only for a few minutes). We wonder if it will change when he gets older, sort of backward energy levels!

  11. I have *finally* caught up on all your posts! As usual, they make me miss SW adventures, but I'm so glad to see you all enjoying everything you love down south. Oh, sweet Taos! He's right where he needs to be, and I'm certain as time goes on, that will only become more and more true for all three of you. Happy 2026 to you 💙
