Summer travels, part 2 ( Idaho, Oregon and Spokane)

After leaving Nevada we made a new to us stop at the Y Knot Winery in Glenns Ferry, Idaho.   It was a short stay on our travels north but the name and location were intriguing so why not or perhaps Y Knot?

The winery is just down the road from Three Island Crossing State Park (of Lewis and Clark fame) and has a small restaurant, 9-hole golf course and decent rv park on site...  We did a little exploring of the area, had dinner and wine tasting and took advantage of our spacious site across the street before moving along into Oregon.

Next stop, Mtn. View RV Park in Baker City, Oregon.   It is a regular stop on our way to Spokane and we always enjoy ourselves.

Our regular end site is shady and grassy and quiet.   Just what we like, well...except the grassy part.   Taos seems to find it "tickly" on his feet and often swerves to the stony driveway as we walk along.   Go figure.

Our neighbor stopped to admire Taos one morning as we sat outside for second cup.  He and Dave chatted and we found out he was a SEAT (single engine air tanker) pilot with a small group of pilots that were being stationed in Baker City in preparation for fire season in this area.   We checked out his plane one day as we were near the airport.   I bet he's very busy this year.... sigh

The rest of the planes were arriving the next day

We drove up into the mountains on the Elkhorn Scenic Byway to continue the route that we tried the last time.    Snow and downed trees made us abort that trip but this time we were able to complete the entire route.     We stopped at beautiful Anthony Lakes for a waterside lunch.

Taos is beginning to allow water to touch his toes now.  Major breakthrough!

We walked the pretty downtown streets and ate, again, at Sweet Wife bakery.   Their lunches and baked goods are absolutely delicious, and... they make fresh cardamom rolls every day!

Oh Dave....he kept Beluga smelling sweet by bringing in the last few peony flowers he found on his morning walks....

Oh Dave....

The weather changed drastically during our days there.   It went from very hot to cloudy with lots of rain.   The sky was often interesting to watch.

Walla Walla, Washington is also one of our regular stops, one we very much enjoy.

Lots of wineries, restaurants and plenty of green places for the boys to walk and interesting things for them to smell.

even bronze statues have something to offer

one of Dave's favorites - Croque Madame with pickled onions and frites!

Did I mention restaurants and wineries?

Lest you think all we do is eat and drink, here are a few pictures from a nearby event we were lucky enough to be able to attend.     The Wildhorse Casino in Pendleton, Oregon held its 30th annual Pow Wow celebrating the cultures and traditions of indigenous tribes, bringing traditional songs, dances and regalia to all.   The celebration was free and spectators were encouraged.

Dancing and drumming competitions featured participants of all ages from across the western US and Canada.

We were so affected by the sounds of those drums and the haunting voices.  It brought tears to our eyes and goose bumps to our arms.   I took very few pictures; I was mesmerized by the pageantry and the deep meaning and emotions in front of me.

Full disclosure - an Indian Fry Bread Taco may have been consumed by one of us....or both of us.

Spokane was next.    We spent a week there, visiting with Jesse, Erin and Annie before we all moved west and a dedicated vacation week on the Washington coast.

We enjoyed a few meals together, celebrated Jesse's birthday and walked around the beautiful Manito Park's rose garden.

There were lots of people at the gardens that evening, a few strolling and sniffing and admiring its beauty.    But....many, many folks were not.   They were sitting together in large groups, looking at their phones.   Not the flowers, their phones.

Not talking with each other, looking at their phones.   I wondered.     Jesse told me that they were probably playing a game, Pokémon scavenger hunt.    Who knew?   Sigh.

Soon we were on our way west, with a short stop at Memaloose State Park on the Columbia River.  We'd meet the family at a sweet Airbnb in Seabrook, Washington.    More in the next post!

  1. I think all those activities were just something to do between eating and drinking times!

  2. Good morning Sue! You do the best “catchup” posts! I never know how to start, how to choose from a kazillion photos, or what to say! This is a beautiful post with so many favorites…wildflowers, mile high “Christmas trees”, lots of water and green grass, and plates with yummy food. But the best is Annie and Taos! I love Annie’s gorgeous curls, bright blue eyes, and big smile. And sweet, smart Taos puzzled by what the heck is wrong with the “other” dog on the sidewalk, testing the waters, and preferring the gravel over grass. I agree with you about the Pow Wow. I too love the rhythm and movement. The Eagle feathers are gorgeous, the dahlias color is quite showy, and your quiet end spot at the SP is inviting. And the folks at the gardens must not be happy folks. So sad!

    1. Hi Gay. I agree with you, it's hard to gather your thoughts for a blog when too much time has passed. I'm almost caught up now though!

  3. You sure got some breathtaking scenery in the PNW -- wows! And Annie is growing up into a young girl -- looks adorable! I'm convinced Taos has some sort of sensory sensitivity going on. First he's iffy about water ....and then grass???? Yikes. Love to you all. Cindy

    1. You know he's a flower with delicate little feet! Actually, it's when grass is wet or damp that he tries (gently) to avoid it!

  4. In defense of Taos, Kayce doesn't like wet grass either! :) Those photos of your meals made my mouth water. I love the mosaic and Taos checking out the bronze dog--too funny! I'm with Gay, Annie's curls are so adorable! Is the coast smoke free?

    1. We just checked that rv park out, it looks great! We always continue on into Walla Walla instead, (wineries and resaurants ya know....) but the Casino is a good option too. Annie is growing so fast!

  6. I think Jim hit the nail on the head...keeping busy until the next winery and meal! Haha! You found some beautiful places and the food looked so yummy. There was a Jeopardy question just the other night on the difference between the Croque Madame and the Monsieur. I thought of you two! That beautiful salad has Dave's name all over it. Lots of flower smelling going on!! Good to Taos is getting a little braver with the water. That photo of him with the bronze dog is too funny. Sure looks like tons of fun and adventures. Youth certainly has a lot of energy. Love Annie's beautiful smile and wild curls.

    1. Glad we could add to your Jeopardy knowledge! That salad was mine, but I did share it with Dave.....fooled ya didn't I! We walked past the bronze dog the next time and Taos didn't even give it a second look, he already found out it wasn't real and wasn't about to embarrass himself.

  7. What a great trip thus far! I want to eat and drink all the things - that salad looks amazing. Taos says he's a desert dog - grass and water are for others :-) Love that ethereal sky in the Oregon fog. I figure all those same folks would be stuck inside on their screens if they didn't have the scavenger game to play outside, so better! PowWows are really powerful, and I'm envious of your experience in Pendleton. Wonderful feathers, thanks for sharing. Miss Annie is a delight with her curls and giggles and kiddo energy.

    1. Yep, we've decided that he is a desert dog!
The salad WAS amazing, as is most of the food at that restaurant.
You would have loved this PowWow,, in addition to the regalia and the drumming/singing, we loved watching how the sounds moved everyone, even the littlest children. The spirit would just get inside them, and they'd spontaneously join in the dancing as if a trance......
