So, why did we leave? These decisions are often made because of imminent weather, road conditions, social appointments, pantry needs, whim, etc. Today we looked at the weather reports and decided that driving the curvy, narrow route to the coast in the sun was better than staying where we were and enjoying the sunny day lakeside. We are happy we made that decision.
We drove west on 140 to the Medford, Oregon area, then took I-5 north to Grants Pass. From there we started down the windy (and winding) 199 south through Oregon into California and on to Crescent City, California. Yep, California again. I hope this is the last time we'll be here on this trip because the California page in my Atlas is so well used that it is barely attached any more. Before we head west I'll have to get a new one.
Our drive was a non-event until we turned off I-5 onto 199 south. This section of the trip lived up to its billing as a winding, narrow road with numerous switchbacks. It followed the Smith River ( a tributary of the Umpqua River) through deeply forested mountains. Sharp curves with rocky protuberances made Dave hang on and use all his skills to avoid scraping mirrors with the cliff walls and/or a few semi's that passed us way too closely. The side of the road was carpeted with beautiful flowers all along the way. I recognized a few of them as dogwood and rhodies, but the rest zoomed by too fast for me to pay attention. Besides, I needed to keep my eyes on the road to help Dave drive!
The last portion of our drive took us through Redwood National Forest. No pictures today, we'll take the jeep and be able to take good pictures without worrying about nicking any of the huge trees on the way by!
Some pictures of our site at the Redwood RV Resort, just north of Crescent City, California. Its deep in the Redwoods, no sun here. Dave balked a bit and we walked around looking at other spaces, but ultimately this one was perfect. I promised we'd take our morning or afternoon beverages out into a sunny spot and he gave in.

Oh, I remember that highway, but we were headed the other way towards Grant Pass. Wife had to shut her eyes a few times. Better to do in the "sun" than in the wind and rain, that is for sure. Enjoy the Redwoods....you just gotta love the smell.

Gorgeous! So glad that you got there safely....18 wheelers on those types of roads are NO FUN when you're driving Beluga and hugging the road.
ReplyDeleteLove the Redwoods. What a beautiful setting.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!!! We didn't get to the Redwoods this past trip. We must go back there next year. I love the Redwoods. Take lots of pictures and post them all!!! How nice to have the trees flowering! A little touch of the east. Your new spot is so pretty. The sunlight will stream through those trees and make it gorgeous. Enjoy! Looking forward to pictures.
