On the road again. We enjoy staying in one place and investigating our surroundings at a leisurely pace. On the other hand, we also enjoy the excitement of packing up and moving on to new scenery and new places to explore. As a result of a front passing last night, the weather was cool and clear, just perfect for a drive. Also as a result of that front, it was quite windy, not so good for driving a huge box down 2 lane roads. We left Kanab and headed south on route 89 to Fredonia, then west into Arizona on 389 until it turned into 59 as it curved back into Utah. Three states in one day, now we really don't know what time it is!
We drove through the infamous Colorado City. Its ironic, I think, that it sits at the foot of Zion. I wonder how many women there feel like they've reached the fabled promised land? The "city" sits in the middle of absolutely nowhere, there is nothing but wilderness surrounding Colorado City, no where to go....
It was pretty interesting to notice the size of the houses there. Most looked like large apartment complexes, hmmmmm.
On the descent into Hurricane, we found a great place to stop for lunch. No matter that it was a place for trucks to check their brakes before the long downward grade, it afforded beautiful views for our mid day meal.

After lunch, we continued through the Virgin River Gorge toward Las Vegas. The gorge's sheer walls were enormous. We felt like an ant crawling through the canyons. The scale and uneven lines made me feel really dizzy and disoriented as the walls rose at odd angles all around us. It was hard to know up from down....
We didn't get a site at Valley of Fire State Park. They don't take reservations, so we had to drive in to find out if there were any spots for us. And there weren't any. Plan B.....
Back on the road, through Las Vegas at rush hour, heading for the Lake Mead RV Village and a site in the Lake View row. Driving through bumper to bumper traffic in Beluga at the end of a long windy drive was not a pleasant experience for either of us, especially Dave. We couldn't wait to get away from all the cars, trucks and urban noise.
Finally we got to the turn off for Lake Mead Drive and entered the Lake Mead National Recreational Area.
Our wonderful Golden Age Pass got us in for free again. What a deal.
Ah, wide open spaces again |

sunset's light across the lake. We're here until Sunday morning, I think we're going to be happy here . |
Sorry you didn't get into Valley of Fire. But it looks like your view is pretty awesome at the Plan B site!!
