Spokane wrap up

I'm sitting here waiting for Jesse and Erin to stop in to say goodbye, bon voyage, see you soon - with pizza.    They made us a wonderful farewell dinner last night....steak and a very special bottle of wine,  but I think we need just one more goodbye dinner, don't you?

Lewis is staring at me, waiting for his dinner, but I'll just use this time to show you the last pictures of our time here in Spokane.    Not a popular decision but delayed gratification isn't necessarily a bad  thing, right?

beers for three at Das Stein Haus

As you know by now, there was much eating and drinking.   We were here during Spokane's Restaurant Week so we just HAD to take advantage of the smaller, three course menus offered at restaurants we wouldn't have thought to go to.   Scratch, Left Bank Bistro,  Das Stein Haus, etc.   When Erin got back home, we all went to what became one of my favorites - Vieux Carre.  I took no pictures of our Shrimp and Grits, Red Beans and Rice, Cornbread with Come Back Sauce, Beignets and Bourbon Bread Pudding....we were entirely too busy.  burp

the world's best left overs thanks to Jesse's and Erin's creativity

our odd assortment of wine glass choices

There was work done.    Dave continued to work with Jesse, helping to add some beautiful touches to their already cool old house.     Our "living room" tv gave up the ghost during this time also.     Mr. David's A-1 TV Repair Service was able to get us a new one and then come over after his dinner to install it.   Right now his affiliate service - Mr. David's A-1 Sewer and Valve Installation LLC is outside, changing Beluga's black/grey water valves.    I hope he's finished before Jesse and Erin arrive with the pizza.    I was going to offer him a piece as compensation for his prompt attention to our needs.

There was time spent with Dexter, their funny, sweet cat.    He's always part of the scene....

he's always watching.....

he enjoys his daily maulings.....

naptime in the living room....

Last week we all took a day to explore nearby Green Bluff (Spokane's famous fruit/vegetable growing area) and the up to the top of Mt. Spokane - after brunch of course.

I took few pictures of the fruit buying part of the excursion.    Suffice it to say Green Bluff is a picturesque and fertile area not far from Spokane.    We stopped at a few stands and bought delicious peaches, melon, pears, plumbs and tomatoes, etc.     Dave and I enjoyed ourselves so much that we took another drive up there by ourselves later in the week to visit a couple places we'd missed (Walter's Fruit Ranch - for pie) and revisit one that we particularly liked.

The paved road leading to the top of Mt. Spokane was very narrow but afforded beautiful vistas of the surrounding lakes and hills.    I'm happy I wasn't driving....I felt safe in Jesse's big truck and in the knowledge that he'd done this before and knew the way.      Dear friend Jodee took a different route to the top during a previous visit.   gasp

That's about all I have until we're back on the road tomorrow.    It's been a wonderful and relaxing summer and we're already looking forward to next year's visit.

Here they come!

  1. Dave is a man of many talents! I'd tackle the TV, but leave the valves to someone else. Eww
Good times deserve good food and good wine. You made the best of all of it. What a great visit!
Hope you have some leftover pizza for the road.

  3. We've really enjoyed the plethora of good food this summer, now it's back to what "Suzi's kitchen" can produce! While I enjoy cooking, I'll admit that this has been a nice break!

  4. Your summer was perfect! I'm always impressed at what Dave can accomplish. I love the length of Erin's new work area. It's big, much work can take place there.

    1. He's a keeper, that's for sure! Erin is so excited to have her new "office" almost ready to move in to. You're right, much work will be done there!

  5. What a nice visit. As a mom, I always enjoyed the interactions between Joe and the kids…silly jokes and laughter, serious discussions to solve the worlds problems or working on projects…are all special memories. I’m sure you will take them with you. I love Erin’s office space. It looks like an upstairs view. The lavender reflection on the truck is really cool. And Dexter is quite a handsome fella. Safe travels…

    1. Special memories to be sure.... Erin's upstairs office will have a fabulous view of the pine tree tops and the lovely back yard. Can't wait to see it finished.

  6. I don't know exactly what's in that pan on the stove, but I want it! Looks delicious. It also looks like you had some bright clear blue skies recently. I'm sure that was wonderful after all the heat and smoke you endured earlier in your trip. What a terrific summer. Safe travels!

    1. I don't know exactly what was in that pan either....my mother would have called it "angemacht" which she always applied to a meal that was "mixed up", or one that was made up of lots of different things. I do know there were peaches, basil, pasta, and other things from another meal. It was mightly good!

  9. It must be hard to say goodbye after such a wonderful, leisurely, and productive summer together. Such fabulous meals you've had! Like I said before, I think the gourmet meals that come out of Jesse and Erin's kitchen look every bit as fabulous as any restaurant meal. And I got a laugh out of Dexter and his 'daily maulings.' Eric does the same with Magnolia and she loves it! No claws or teeth, but it's a good play fight. Safe travels home!

  10. ....Jesse and Erin are very good cooks and they both enjoy good meals out so we've all had a great time. It was harder to leave this time, but we'll see each other during the holidays (I hope, Covid willing) and we'll be back up in their area next summer. Jesse is missing his big thumping labs and Dexter has had to step in to fill that need. He seems to really enjoy the maulings and comes to look for them if they aren't forthcoming!

  11. Hard to believe summer is wrapping up already! Dexter is adorable and clearly rules the roost. Glad you found a better way to the top of the mountain - but your family doesn't need to hang off the edge!! Love, love the flowers and reflection on the fender. Safe travels!

  12. Dexter is definitely an important part of that household! Pictures are deceiving....Jess and Erin are sitting on rocks that look as if they're positioned on the edge, but actually, the rocks are spread out below them on a relatively gentle slope...relatively. You'll notice I wasn't sitting on one of them.

  13. What a great wrap up to a great family summer. Good food is always wonderful, but making it for and sharing it with family is the best umami. I laughed at every single Dexter photo, especially the lurking ones. Damn, I miss having a cat!

  14. Okay, Dexter is cute but...not one stinking photo of Lewis when Jesse came to visit. I know Lew was excited but, noooo, we only thought of taking photos of Dexter. Geesh! I"m glad you had a wonderful time in Spokane making up for the lost Covid time. Lots of fun Jesse/Erin time doing what you love...eating/drinking out at good restaurants and enjoying homecooked meals from the young chefs. Nice to know you have a comfortable spot to visit for the summers. Enjoy your long leisurely journey back to AZ.
