Friends - 2

Harpers Ferry has been a frequent stop on our travels when we moved north and/or south on the east coast.      The National Historical Park is interesting ("John Brown's body lies a moldering in his grave"), as is the confluence of the mighty rivers - Potomac and Shenandoah.    There are numerous historic sights and beautiful old small towns.     We've explored and experienced this area numerous times, but this visit was purely to enjoy a Familiar Favorite, an old Friend (s) and good Food.     The drive up from North Carolina was pretty, albeit smoky - not something we've ever experienced here.

is that Beluga passing us?

We settled in at the Harper's Ferry KOA, a place we've stayed at many times before.    This time we had a newly created spot in the woods, just above a civil war trench in the woods.

The sites were pretty and private, but......so uneven.    We found ourselves staggering about in the dark when we got up in the middle of the night to........well, you know.    Our ankles were scraped by the door slamming closed when we let it go and I fully expected to find Dave upside down in the bedroom closet when I got up in the morning.......   We were only there for two nights and the body does acclimate eventually, so it was all fine in the end.

We met my old friend Mary and her cool husband Dave at Alma Bea in nearby, historic Shepherdstown.  Mary and I have been friends since we were in our early teens, we lived through the back field from each other and both rode rangy, grade Palomino horses - four blond pony tails among us.....

She was in my wedding, I was in hers.....

Back to the present - we had a lovely meal at Alma Bea, an old railroad warehouse beautifully redone to house a modern restaurant specializing in "Appalachian flavors, tapas style"....Intriguing!

one of Dave's choices - deviled eggs!

Mary chose Mussels

The next day Dave and I stayed inside, it was so very smoky outside we could barely see the next site.    I concentrated on laundry, bills and a blog to pass the day before meeting Dave and Mary, again in beautiful Shepherdstown, at one of  our favorite restaurants - the Press Room.

More wonderful food and conversation.    Is this becoming a pattern?

Dave (my Dave) loved his Seafood Stew

After another 3 hour meal we said our goodbyes and went our separate ways.    Dave and I walked around the little town before heading home.    As we walked in front of the old courthouse we heard someone playing a familiar tune on a harmonica, Camp Town Races I think....and then a few doors down we saw a man sitting on a bench playing accompaniment on an accordion!

oh Dave

The Potomac River runs along behind the historic district and you know we had to make our way down to it!

little streams cascading down to the river

what do you suppose this was?

We left Harpers Ferry this morning and drove the very familiar route 15 north beside the picturesque Susquehanna River to this night's stop at Ives Run COE campground in Tioga, Pennsylvania.     The smoke abated somewhat, but was joined by drizzle and rain to make for a gloomy day.

We thought we were all settled into a nice, grassy and private site at the COE park in Tioga, but the high voltage electric kept tripping our surge protector.   Not a situation we can live with.    We prevailed upon the Ranger to find us another spot.

large Tulip Poplar tree behind our site

Pack things back up, unhook, drive around the loop to site # 8, (good electric service) hook up again, slides out, etc. etc., wine served and enjoyed, supper eaten and we're now happy for the night.    Tomorrow we'll drive the 90 or so miles into New York and  our old driveway at the lake!    See you there.

a gloved Tulip thief at my door.....

  1. Poor, poor Beluga ...I've never seen her look so lop-sided. Amazing that you could "adjust!" So hard to believe that you're so CLOSE by!!!! OMG -- very exciting. Air quality is much improved over here -- hope that it can stay that way. Bet you can hardly wait to see the Lake ...and back Beluga into her *spot.* Safe travels, my friends. CindyP

  2. I love the pony tails and how cool that you and Mary both have Daves. I would like Harpers Ferry…so quaint and colorful AND yummy. I have no idea what the tall skinny building is, but it’s nice the door was left open!

  3. The town photos were from nearby Shepherstown and you're right....you'd love it. Dave is a great name isn't it!

  4. Fine food and fine friends, does it get any better? Altho I worked in DC for a few years I had to lookup Appalachian Cuisine, since I didn't think seafood would be a local favorite. Who knew!? I thought the tall building looked defence/warning tower, but that would not need a door to nowhere.

    1. I didn't really know there was such a thing as "Appalachian cuisine" either, but what we had was delicious! The tower ish thing beside the Potomac River was odd, maybe someone will know what it was? It didn't look like there were any stair remnants but there had to have been, right?

  5. Two blonde ponytails, two more great restaurants, two Daves, and best of all, two more wonderful friends!

I laughed out loud at the image of you waking to possibly find Dave face-planted in the closet :D

    1. I giggled to myself each time I got out of bed in the dark, luckily neither of us fell, or ran into the closet, phew!

  6. Looks like you had a wonderful time with Mary and Dave. I love the two blonde ponytails! Shepherdstown looks like the kind of place we enjoy...and those restaurants, yum! Ugh, you really did have some nasty smoke. We had a bit of haze in the afternoon, but nothing too bad. I hope you have clear skies at the lake. You're on a roll with the friends part of your tour! XO

    1. We did have a great time catching up with Mary and Dave, it's been a while since we saw them. We're sitting at the lake, right where you two did, and it's a lovely day. Jerry and Pelle have made the cottage their own and they love spending time here. We're happy.

So bizarre to see the smoke "over there" - I sure hope Canada gets some heavy rain very soon! I love the beautiful opera house. How fun to get together for tasty and interesting vittles with long time friends. Tulip trees are a new favorite since we started traveling - looks like the flower filcher is a fan too :-)

    1. It is odd to have smoke here, I don't remember ever having any in my lifetime. The Flower Filcher's botanical tastes are fairly eclectic.

  8. Hmm, who got the first Dave or who copied who? I bet you had a grand time with the other blond pony tail, you must have been sisters! We thought of you and the smoke as you headed NY but did not realize it came down as far as Harpers Ferry.
I think that was in a outhouse, with a very long ....

    1. I got Dave first !!!! We did have a nice time with Mary and Dave, fun catching up, it's been awhile. Plenty of good restaurants in that area, a sweet little town.
      An outhouse.....interesting theory!

  9. Love the wedding picture! Fun to see people back in the day. Those deviled eggs looked interesting but I would have gone for the mussels.

    1. "back in the day".....not exactly the horse and buggy days but 53 years ago. Eggs were good, but he wishes he had the mussels too!

  10. Harper's Ferry was one of favorite motorcycle trips on nice spring and fall days when we were in PA. It was a beautiful ride. Nice little town. Great meals with friends. Dave's seafood stew looks SO good, as do the mussels. Yum! I can't believe people build RV spots and don't level them! I'll never understand that. Hopefully, you will not have the smoke in NY.

    1. I bet it was a nice trip on a motorcycle, pretty, windy back roads. Dave said that seafood stew was one of the best renditions he's had! No smoke here at the lake, but.....it's cloudy and rain/thunder is all around us.

  11. First we had the Canadian smoke, now the east coast has it--they need some of this rain we are having! All your meals look so good--how fun to have a friend from your teens. I hate unlevel spots--the refrigerator door won't stay open, the bathroom door swings shut--not to mention possibly finding your husband upside down in the closet--I had to laugh!

    1. It's raining today, the smoke is gone. I guess I don't really like either but no one asked me! Dave managed to get us level enough that the frig. door stayed open as did the cupboards but getting up in the dark was a real experience!
