January

Well, it wasn't those darling little sneezes that knocked me down.....and then hit Dave.    It was Covid.

We were so careful, masking everywhere, sanitizing within an inch of our lives, even exhaling as we passed "others"!     It finally got us.     I don't mind saying that I don't ever want it again.     We're relatively fine now, testing negative.     Our heads are still plugged, and we're sort of lethargic, but we've managed to enjoy a few bright spots.

"Our" owl, Hooty, has returned this new year and brought along Mr. Hooty.    They sit close to each other and talk softly, when they're not snoozing.

She is quite stoic, but he will take flight if we point anything at him (i.e. my phone camera) so we just enjoy watching and listening and don't stress about getting the perfect photo.

The clouds have been beautiful, but the temps have been lower than we'd like this past week.    In come the pots of flowers every night, covers thrown over a couple more tender plants for protection from frost and freeze.

More and more I'm thinking that I like those Mexican metal plant sculptures......they don't care one whit about temperatures, or moisture levels, wind, or even critters!

The really bright spot in our January, however, was a visit from our former business partners and friends, Jerry and Pelle.     They bought our lake cottage which made our move to Arizona possible.       Unfortunately, their scheduled flight from Buffalo coincided with one of the nastier storms that have been training across the country lately.   It was on United Airlines and further affected by the Boeing 737 9Max grounding, so things were touch and go whether they'd get here at all!     We only had three days to visit so every hour delayed was a big deal to us.

As I mentioned before, the temperature was at its coldest during that period and those storms dropped a decent amount of rain and graupel on us as they flew east.    Not ideal to be able to show friends the beauty of our Arizona desert!    Grrrr.

Ultimately, all worked out.     Since we were still a bit stuffy and coughy here at 1055, we put them up at the nearby historic Ranco de Los Caballeros guest/dude ranch.   When they finally arrived at 5 a.m. they were able to go straight to bed and sleep in until they were well rested.

We spent the next two days sightseeing and talking and eating.   We never got around to playing pool on the resorts antique pool table, something Dave was looking forward to....next time?    They drove away, heading for San Diego, on Friday.    It was a short, jam-packed trip, we were so happy everything finally came together for a good visit.

You didn't think I'd miss an opportunity to show you a picture of our sweet little Annabelle, did you?

Christmas presents are fun, but hard.....

  1. If you are going to catch it, you are going to catch it. I don't know if it matters what precautions you take. Glad to hear you are on the mend. Also, glad to see more pictures of the hooty whos!

    1. I suppose it was only a matter of time, but we had a good long run without it!
We're so happy to have her (and Mr.) with us. It makes us smile each morning when we peek out and see her sitting up there.

  2. Looks like you had a nice visit with your Finger Lake Friends, despite the travel and Covid limitations. Arizona certainly has some of the most amazing skies.
Awesome expression on Annabelle as she takes on a now challenge, sooooo cute!

  3. Oh no!!! So sad the dreaded covid got you but also glad you are recovering and were able to spend some time with good friends. I too am considering some of those metal "flowers!"

    1. I nestle colorful annuals among the metal ones and, when they give up the ghost, I replace them with whatever is blooming currently. I'm never really sure what "season" it is when I browse the garden centers here so I'm prepared to toss them when they fizzle out!

  4. Glad that you are making a full recovery, and had the chance to visit with your friends.
Lots of concentration on Annabelle's face.
    Be Safe and Enjoy!

    It's about time.

  5. So happy to read Hooty and the Mr. are hanging out at the Bank house again...what a real treat that is. So happy to read you are feeling better. So happy your friends made it to AZ and you were able to spend quality time with them. So happy you posted a beautiful AZ sky as I might be getting a little homesick. And so happy to read I am not the only who doesn't get flowers and the seasons they go with in our great home state! But the best part...sweet little Annabelle! I love her expressions and how engaged she always seems to be with others or just by herself.

    1. We're always excited when we walk out in the morning and Hooty turns her stern gaze or way. She seems to say "there they are again, every day they stare at me and smile....) Flowers - can't live with them, can't live without them! I, too, love the pictures of this little girl. She's so determined to do what comes next......

  6. Bummed COVID caught up with you and glad you're feeling better. Yes, the last couple weeks have definitely been brrrrr. Bet your NY friends were still happy to see all the blue skies and AZ beauty - and of course their good friends :-) Your gargoyle needs a coat!! Lucky you to have the Hootys enjoying your guest tree. Oh Annabelle you are just the sweetest!

    1. They were surprised at every turn.....this isn't what they imagined Arizona looked like! That table gargoyle always looks grumpy, but never so much as when he gets graupeled on!

  7. The weather hasn't been great for the new year. I guess we are paying for the beautiful Dec. Luckily, it is warming again. But so glad the sun did shine for your company. I am so glad you recovered enough to enjoy their visit. Our 50's were most likely summer like to them. It's been cold, windy, and dark in northern NY. Sweet seeing Annabelle enjoying her new walker that doesn't walk. She working hard to solve that problem:)

  8. That pic of Dave zonked out in front of the fireplace is exactly how we felt during our bout with Covid. We don't want to ever get it again, either! So glad you both were feeling better so that you could enjoy a visit from your friends. Putting them up at the guest ranch was a great idea. Fun times together during the day, and then everyone has their space to retreat to at night!

I really like your metal plant sculptures. And how cool that your owls have returned! Maybe you'll have little hooties this year? Speaking of babies, Annabelle is so adorable and so engaged! I'm betting she has whatever she was working on all figured out by now.

    1. Zonked out is an accurate description of us for the first few days! I'm glad our friend's visit worked out as well, we were really looking forward to it. The dude ranch idea was Daves' and I think it worked out well for us all. I nestle pots of colorful plants among the metal ones and when they die (from cold, or just time out) I replace them with whatever is currently blooming at Lowes! Not the most cost-effective way, but the easiest! Our first year here we had a family of hooties on our roof and in that very tree, so we've got our fingers crossed. Annabelle does take her "problems" seriously. She recently managed to get what she was working on in that picture, into her mouth to help bring that first tooth to the surface!
