Verdi to Walla Walla

We left Verdi, NV under cloudy, rainy skies.   Evidently it had been raining most of the time we were in California because when we pulled in the living room slide we found lots of water pooled on top.    I dried as much as I could reach, and Dave finished the job before we drove away.    (For those of you who don't drive a motorhome with slides, if one doesn't dry any water that has accumulated on top of the now retracted slide before driving away, one runs the risk of the driver receiving a surprise and very unappreciated shower!   We learned that the hard way)

This was a new route for us, our next stop was Winnemucca, NV.    We didn't expect much but were pleasantly surprised.

a Georgia O'Keefe ish picture of Winnemucca Mtn.

We drove to the top of Winnemucca Mountain and enjoyed expansive views of the desert below.     We even saw our campground in the distance.

Beluga is waiting at the distant campground, right below the little cloud

Another day we drove into nearby Water Canyon for our usual alfresco lunch beside the stream.     It was a lush spot of vibrant green in the tan and grey desert.

When you stop and look closely, color is everywhere.

After our usual overnight stop in Caldwell, we arrived in Baker City, Oregon.   We last visited the area in 2012 so we thought it might be time for another look.    They were paving the park, and we weren't looking forward to the usual disruption, noise and smell.   Mt. View RV Park did a stellar job of minimizing the unpleasantness and the result was a beautiful and well-kept park.   We'd definitely stay there again.

Baker City is a nice, small city with beautiful flowers everywhere.     Some cultivated in people's yards and parks, and some growing on the mountain slopes.

OH DAVE!

Oh Dave

We drove mountain roads, ate beside the rushing Power River, wandered pine lined trails, explored the shores of Phillips Lake and watched a new to us bird - American Dipper - walk underwater looking for a meal!       We enjoyed a good breakfast and a few delicious Cardamom rolls at Sweet Wife Bakery in the pretty downtown area.     More left to do there for sure.     Dave always says if we do it all we won't have a reason to come back!

On our last day there we decided to try and drive the Elkhorn Scenic Byway.   The mountains looked pretty snow-covered, but we thought we'd just go as far as we could; if we were lucky, we'd make it the whole way!

We weren't lucky.    A little more than halfway through we ran into relatively deep spring snow on the road ahead.   End of the road for us.   We turned around, content with what we'd seen thus far.

uh oh

I thought I had seen a possible alternative road at a lower elevation, so Dave indulged me, and we turned off the byway to check it out.

nope

End of the road, again!   A Pine tree blocked our passage, so we decided it was "a sign" that it was time to head home!

Actually, the "sign" was right, it was time to head back home the way we came,  and that decision allowed us time to stop at an interesting sight we'd passed by.

Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge

it was a monster

inside the dredge

The Sumpter Valley Dredge was assembled on the Powder River in 1935 to facilitate large scale gold mining in its rich riverbed.   For various reasons, the dredge's mining operations were shut down in l954.   It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and opened to public viewing as the Sumpter Valley Dredge State Park in l974.  It continues to be restored.      Phew!      We were blown away by its sheer size and complexity!     It was late in the day and there was no one around to give us a tour, the visitor's center closed.     Next time for sure!

We left Baker City last week with a vow to return.   Lots more to see and do.

Tonight is our last night in Walla Walla, Washington.   It's a regular stop for us on our way to Spokane and family.   We really enjoy it here, the restaurants and multiple wineries surrounded by the oddly beautiful and soothing, rolling hills of grain.

We'll be in Spokane tomorrow!

  1. We have had slides, but never a class A where a slide shower might be possible. Sounds pretty startling. Love all your sights, love that late spring snow, but smart not going through it.

    1. "startling" is a perfect description! Spring snow is nasty stuff, so heavy and wet.

  2. Great photos and great post! Loved that first moody photo. I bet you are hugging that sweet Annie girl by now! Enjoy your Spokane time!

    1. Thanks Janna. I hope you've finally gotten some sun to dry up your mud! Have you installed your electric fence system yet? How is the little girl handling it?

    2. Kayce is handling her fence like a pro! I have a feeling she will be smart enough to know if she is wearing the collar or not--friends came for dinner last night and brought their Pixie. The two girls ripped and romped all evening--Kayce was not wearing her collar but would hesitate before following Pixie across the "line" we still have marked with flags. We are loving that she stays in the "yard" now instead of wandering so far afield!

  3. Baker City certainly should be added to a stop when we're again in the area. We've also experienced a shower after pulling in the slide, not sure why it doesn't all dump outside.
Interesting tour of the old Dredge, would like to see that in action.
Enjoy your time with the kids and of course Annie!

    1. Lots of the water pours down as we bring the slide in, (we learned to make sure the windows are closed) but when it's been really raining for a while, some of the nasty stuff stays on top and then it's shower time!

  4. Even with all the interesting things that you saw, you save the best for last.
    Stay Safe and Enjoy Annie.

    It's about time.

  5. Yikes! That skeleton -- what the heck was that? What are your assumptions/guesses/extraordinary tales about that one? Was it hanging on by its teeth or what? And the Slide Water! OMG -- another reason I am so glad to not have a slide. That must have been shocking for "the driver!" Eeks. Loved Susie's Grove and you absolutely saved the best picture for last. She is so darling and she's ALL YOURS for the next couple of weeks. Perfect grandparents! Can't wait for all the details! CindyP

    1. We couldn't decide whether the creature had run into the tree and gotten tangled before it died (perhaps previously injured by car or gun or illness) or whether someone had an "interesting" sense of humor. Dave had a slide shower very early on in our RV lives, you only have that happen once before you learn your lesson! Stay tuned for Spokane pictures of you know who! And don't forget sweet Molly, she's there for us too!

  7. Good morning Sue! You did save the best for last…what a sweet little Annie picture! I love those curls and am looking forward to lots more. I think most of us have had slide showers and scrapped ice to close them as well. I love all the flowers and the “Oh Dave” photos crack me up! The snow-capped mountains are gorgeous and the leaning old wooden “museum” building and a skeleton hanging in the tree are most interesting! And a Dutch baby…looks so yummy!

    1. You two would like that area! Road trip?

  8. Suzi, do you have slide toppers on Beluga? They will not stop the "slide shower" phenomenon completely but will certainly mitigate it. The other thing we would do if we had been parked for a while in rainy conditions would be to raise the nose of the bus with the airbags to drain the water off the slide box. Annie is growing up!!

    1. Hi Jim, Yes, we do have toppers but the wind blew rain from the end, up under them. Dave always tips Beluga to help with the draining, but sometimes it's just not enough!
Can't wait to see how Annie has grown, we haven't seen her - in person - since September!

    2. Howdy, figured you had toppers & knew that trick, and yep, you can never get it all, I learned the hard way when we were novices, quite the shower, only made that mistake once.

  9. I'm pleasantly surprised by all the green at Winnemucca! Baker City is such a beautiful spot with all those flowers - Dave-heaven for sure :-) The gold dredge is really interesting, and cool to see it in such good condition after 50+ years. The treed skeleton and tilted chapel must both have interesting stories - or at least ones we can create! How excited you both must be to catch up with Annie and Molly and of course their parental units.

    1. We were surprised by Winnemucca also. Not a bad place to spend a few days instead of just whizzing through on the way to somewhere else. What's your take on the skeleton in the tree?

So glad you shared so many:) Lovely and fun new adventures. Love Annie's curls:) Have fun getting reacquainted with grown up Annie. Pam
