If my last post was to be believed, all we've been doing here in Spokane is eating. That's not entirely true. We've been out exploring the area as much as the temperature and smoky air allows.
Some days sighteseeing is absolutely not possible. When the wind is right (whatever that means) a smoke plume blows in from fires far and wide, obliterating the scenery and making me cough. Fortunately, it doesn't happen that often, but, on the other hand, it's is rarely a completly clear day. Makes for interesting sunsets.
I'm not complaining. The area around us is beautiful in all directions - from towering pine and fir covered mountains, pretty small lakes and the everpresent Spokane River to rolling waves of amber grain that stretch as far as the eye can see.

I was fascinated by these beautiful vistas....by the changing colors, the wind rippling through them, the feeling of being in the middle of a modern art museum. The more I looked, the more I began to notice subtle differences in what was growing there. At first, whizing by in the Jeep, they all looked the same. When I started really paying attention, I noticed different crops in different fields, all shades of the same color. So....we'd stop when we could and I'd race out into the edge of the field, grab a few stalks and get back into the Jeep. We spent a while doing this until we had a good sample. I'd show them to you, but they're in the Jeep and Dave is at Jesse's with it right now. Maybe I'll remember to photograph the stalks later on.....if you're interested

And, well yes, we have been doing more eating and drinking. It's been such a long time since we've been able to go out and such a long time since we've been in an area with so many good places to dine that we may be overdueing it a bit. Sometimes the need for a nap overtakes.....
But, we soldier on. So many things to try, so little time!

After a year of staying home and having to cook, this summer we've eaten out soooo much! Wonderful to see such a variety of places to explore in the area. Lucky you that the kiddos chose such a beautiful place. Love the storks and osprey. I started noticing that the gold fields were different crops - did you find out what they all are? Glad you're getting clear skies too.
ReplyDeleteI haven't fully identified all the crops I pulled up, possibly different varieties of wheat, but maybe barley and definitely canola! Inquiring minds want to know!
ReplyDeleteWOW! The meals all look awesome! So many different adventures to enjoy in Eastern Washington.
ReplyDeletewe're having a great time and are certainly eating well!
DeleteSo great you can get out and enjoy - y'all look happy!
ReplyDeletethat we are!
DeleteYES, we want to see the stalks!
ReplyDeleteEverytime you post food photos my mouth eaters and then I have to Google. It all looks and sounds so yummy. I had no idea burrata was cheese and naan was flatbread. I don’t get out enough! So happy you are having days to go exploring. Golden waves of grain have always been a favorite…we didn’t have many of them in Georgia…to photograph!
Duh…my mouth waters! 😩🤪
Deletecheck out the next blog, I'll post pictues of a few of them. I had no idea there were so many different kinds of wheat.....but then, why would I? The peach and burrata naan was amazing and so easy!
DeleteThe smoke is so dense. :-(( But on the days when it's not, you're getting out and seeing so many interesting things. The restaurant scene in Spokane is fabulous! Actually, I think the restaurant scene at Jesse and Erin's is the best of all, though. They are so creative!
ReplyDeletewe had a few very nice days but today the smoke is back in full force....sigh. Yes, Jesse and Erin are quite a culinary team!
DeleteI keep laughing at the thought of you guys driving along, coming to a screeching halt, and you running into the fields to steal handfuls of vegetation. LOL. It'd be fun to explain that to a police officer. "It's for my blog! I swear!"
ReplyDeletethe thought did cross my mind.....but I figured I'd play the "crazy old lady" card and instructed Dave to roll his eyes at the officer.....
DeleteIt's amazing how many areas have been effected by the smoke. It sure has traveled far. We have a smokey haze over the mountains most days. Our brilliant blue sky is missing too often. Seeing the various wheat would very interesting!! Good to see you are getting out to do some auto hiking and finding some beautiful water spots. Love seeing Jesse and Erin!
ReplyDeleteDave is spending lots of time helping Jesse work on projects at his beautiful old home, but in between, we're managing to find lots to do and see. Our several times a week dinners with Jesse and Erin are a real highlight.
DeleteYes, a photo of the stalks would be nice! You're making me hungry and envious of your explorations...though I could do without the smoke!
ReplyDeletewe could definitely do without the smoke, but then so would millions of others for lots of reasons! We're certainly enjoying ourselves despite the on and off haze.
