August 1

Our time in Bandon has come to an end.   Aug. 1, 2016 is our last day here and I know we'll miss these lovely cool temperatures, blue skies and fabulous beaches when we're gone.   The only thing we won't miss, however, is the constant (day and night) 20 mph winds and the near 40 mph gusts.    Our skin is nice and pink and completely exfoliated, thank you.

Today, Aug. 1, 2016 is the anniversary of our wedding day, 46 years ago.   We were just babes but we knew what we wanted.    It has been a wonderful ride!

Since today is our last day here we had to take care of all the necessary packing up jobs,  but managed to make a little time for a final trip to the beach and a nice dinner at the Alloro Wine Bar.

The Beach!   I thinks I see the beach!

I loves the wind in my face!

part poodle, part mountain goat!

the core of a concretion

On our drive on the beach, south of Whiskey Run, we came upon a 3/4 ton pickup truck stuck dead in the windswept sand.    Five people and two dogs were waiting for someone to come along and help.       Why they tried to drive in the soft drifts instead of the hard wet sand we never found out.   I guess you can't fix stupid.....

Dave had a tow strap so he agreed to try to help them out of their spot.   He didn't have much enthusiasm, however, because of the way they were stuck, their position in the dune above us and the waves breaking in front of us.   All five of them piled back into their truck as our jeep tightened the strap and started to pull.

Dave's instincts were correct and the truck didn't budge. We didn't want to dig ourselves into the sand along with them so we wished them well and continued on our way.    They said they had called someone and were hoping to be rescued soon.      We wondered who would come, a tow truck on the beach, a tractor?

Tomorrow we move inland to Valley of the Rogue State Park between Grants Pass and Medford, Oregon.

  2. Happy Anniversary, my friends:) What a very nice way to spend it...by the water:) The wind swept sand is beautiful and so white. Lew is not taking his eyes off the road while he searches for that perfect playground for himself. He sure had a great time running with the wind and climbing in the rocks. We must plan another trip to the Alabama Hills just for him:) This time we will boondock in the rocks:)
I love seeing the little center that creates a concretion. It's hard to imagine just how long it took. Dave got to try out his tow strap and it wasn't for pulling your Jeep out!! Yes, you can't fix stupid! But you were good guys and tried to help. Safe travels as you begin the journey to Colorado:)

  4. Lewis and the wind and the sand! Love it and you two are amazing - 46 years pretty much says you made the right choice! Cannot wait to hear what you think of your new spot. You are giving me lots of good places to that I've yet to check out in all my trips to OR. Travel safe!

  7. What a sweet way to celebrate—time on the beach, and dinner at Alloro (it's been on our list, but has been closed every time we've been there). Happy Anniversary! Wishing you many more wonderful years of adventure and love. Fun to see your wedding photo. :-)
